Veterans office hard to get to

http://www.nevadaappeal.com/article/20070905/OPINION/109050062#topofpage

I am a disabled veteran and recently had a need to go to the Regional Office of the Veterans Administration, which was previously located at 1201 Terminal Way for many years.

Now there is a new office located at 5460 Reno Corporate Drive. If you can find this place then there are many other problems. First there is not a Reno Transit Bus within one mile. What are the wheelchair-bound to do at that point?

When you arrive, there is a metal detector and two armed guards, not so in the old office.

When you get to see a counselor, the room is more like a prison visiting room than the friendly cubby holes used before.

The veterans who had to travel about 1.62 miles from the V.A. hospital to the Regional office now have nearly 7 miles to get seen.

There is no shuttle to pick them up and deliver them and the director seems to have no sympathy for this situation.

I have been told the V.A. could have built its new office on the vacant lot across from the Main Post Office on Vassar and next to the Social Security office. Why did they build behind rattlesnake mountain and make it so hard for the vets? This is a disgrace and a slap in the face to the men and women who served this country.

Doesn't Don Idding's realize without the veterans he would have no job? Mr. Iddings is the Director of the V.A. Regional Office.

I was told if the vets don't like the situation they can do their veteran business on line? Give me a break many of our older veterans and the very sick veterans don't have or can not comprehend the computer. What has happened to the respect for our veterans? You only need to go and spend a few hours at the V.A. hospital at 1000 Locust St. to see how impossible this situation really is. There are many veterans on oxygen and in wheel chairs of many types and so many are missing limbs.

This is truly a sad state of affairs.

"When those who are responsible for the Leadership of State, begin to move in villainous ways, when they begin to destroy the fabric of what it is that our Nation is held together with; when they violate the Constitution of Our Nation and begin to do things that are false to our dream and our hopes----IT IS INCUMBENT UPON EVERY CITIZEN BY RIGHT, BUT ALSO BY RESPONSIBILITY, TO CHALLENGE THAT ADMINISTRATION, TO RAISE THEIR VOICE IN VIGOROUS DISSENT AND TO CHANGE THE WAY IN WHICH THE STATE IS DOING BUSINESS....AND THOSE WHO FAIL TO DO THAT, SHOULD BE CHARGED WITH PATRIOTIC TREASON! And I am hopeful that on my epitaph it will say : 'He cannot be charged with Patriotic Treason'." --Teddy Roosevelt
