Biden Calls For Ban on “Assault Weapons” and “High-Capacity Magazines” Following Boulder Shooting

Joe Biden called for a federal ban on “assault weapons” and “high-capacity magazines” following the deadly shooting in Boulder, Colorado by a Syrian migrant.

Speaking from the White House on Tuesday, Biden urged Democrats to quickly pass a strict gun control law for him to sign.

“While we’re still waiting for more information regarding the shooter, his motive…I don’t need to wait another minute let alone an hour to take common sense steps that will save lives in the future and to urge my colleagues in the House and Senate to act,” Biden said.

“We can ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines in this country once again,” he continued. “I got that done when I was a senator. It passed, it was the law for the longest time and it brought down these mass killings. We should do it again.”

“This isn’t and should not be a partisan issue, this is an American issue. It will save lives,” he added.

Biden’s remarks come shortly after former President Obama called on Democrats to swiftly pass gun control measures in Congress.

“It is long past time for those with the power to fight this epidemic of gun violence to do so,” Obama said in a statement. “It will take time to root out the disaffection, racism and misogyny that fuels so many of these senseless acts of violence.”

Biden has been calling for an “assault weapons” and “high-capacity magazines” ban for some time, pledging to do so on the anniversary of the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting last month.

As previously reported, Democrats typically define an assault weapon as any long rifle that looks scary and shoots bullets, so it’s safe to say that Biden is calling for a blanket rifle ban.
