Senior WHO Official Says China Is ‘Under-Representing’ COVID-19 Deaths

A senior World Health Organization (WHO) official says the Chinese regime has been under-reporting deaths and hospitalizations from COVID-19 in the country.

“We believe that the current numbers being published from China under-represent the true impact of the disease in terms of hospital admissions, in terms of ICU admissions, particularly in terms of death,” Mike Ryan, WHO emergencies director, told reporters at a Jan. 4 media briefing.

“And we would like to see more data on a more geographic basis across China.”

In late December 2022, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) narrowed its definition for classifying deaths as attributable to COVID-19 by counting only those involving pneumonia or respiratory failure sparked by COVID-19, surprising some world health experts.

The CCP has been reporting daily COVID-19 deaths in single-digit figures.

“We still do not have complete data,” Ryan said.

India to Buy Mines in Argentina to Compete with China for Electric Vehicle Elements

The Indian government is reportedly interested in buying a copper mine and up to two lithium mines in Argentina, in a bid to catch up with China as a top provider of minerals needed for electric vehicle (EV) batteries.

India’s Business Standard on Thursday explained that several Indian mining and minerals corporations joined forces to create an enterprise called Khanij Bidesh India Ltd. (KABIL) in 2019, with an eye toward securing a “supply of strategic materials.”

Facebook Faces $414 Million Fine in Europe over Targeted Ads

Facebook (now known as Meta) is facing a $414 million fine from European regulators, who ruled that the company’s services illegally deployed targeted ads using data that tracks users around the internet.

The decision strikes at the heart of Facebook’s business model, which is structured around collecting highly individualized data on users to power a targeted ad machine. It is this model that powered Facebook and Instagram’s social media dominance.

Palestinian Gov’t Daily Charges Israel with ‘Training and Recruiting’ Spy Cows

The latest Palestinian zoological-related conspiracy theory has Israel outfitting “spy cows” with surveillance equipment to track their movements, according to a piece by the Palestinian Authority’s official daily.

Palestinians have in the past accused Israel of sending genetically engineered sharks into Egyptian waters, “super rats” to infest the Muslim Quarter in Jerusalem’s Old City, and killer Zionist dolphins off Gaza’s shores to attack Hamas frogmen.

Philippines President Signs More Than a Dozen Agreements with China on Beijing Visit

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., often referred to by his nickname “Bongbong,” made his first visit in office to China this week, holding meetings with dictator Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang.

The Marcos administration said the president planned to sign up to 14 bilateral agreements with the Chinese during his visit but insisted he would not give ground on Philippine territorial claims in the South China Sea.

The South China Morning Post (SCMP) on Wednesday said Beijing saw Marcos’ visit as crucial to stopping “a key member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations getting closer to the United States amid the heightened rivalry between Washington and Beijing.”

Philippine officials said on Wednesday that while the tone of Marcos’ visit was cordial and constructive, he was more determined than Duterte to stand by Manila’s claims in what it calls the “West Philippine Sea.”

To that end, the Marcos administration ordered an increased military presence near the Spratly Islands last month after China began creating artificial islands in the Spratly archipelago. The Philippines has also lodged objections with China over its tactic of “swarming” disputed islands with so many boats that Filipino fishermen cannot access their traditional hunting grounds.

The South China Sea was also the scene of a tense encounter in November, when a Chinese coast guard vessel intercepted a Philippine naval craft and forcibly seized Chinese rocket debris it was towing.

“The issues between our two countries are problems that do not belong between two friends,” Marcos said optimistically when departing for Beijing on Tuesday.

McCarthy Inching Closer to Deal With Dissidents That Will Make Him Speaker of the House

Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) lost an 11th straight vote late Thursday in his bid to become the new speaker of the House of Representatives, but his team’s intensive back-room bargaining appeared to be closing in on a deal with many of the populist conservatives who are demanding new leadership in Congress.

As occurred in the 10 previous counts, beginning on Jan. 3, Democratic leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York received the votes of all 212 members of his party.

Also in the 11th ballot, McCarthy received 200 Republican votes, while Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida got 12 and Rep. Kevin Hern (R-Okla.) had seven. Former President Donald Trump was chosen by one, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.). To become speaker of the House, the winner must receive 218 votes or a majority of the members voting.

Shortly after the counting of the 11th ballot was completed, the House adjourned until noon on Friday. The adjournment vote was a straight party win for the Republicans, 219–213, with one GOPer joining the Democrats and two not voting.

Biden Administration Announces Effort to Secure Border, Expand Parole Program

President Joe Biden’s administration on Jan. 5 announced steps that officials said would improve border security and help slow illegal immigration while helping migrants obtain legal status in the United States.

The administration is expanding a parole program that was restricted to Venezuelans to would-be immigrants from three other countries. People from Cuba, Nicaragua, and Haiti are now eligible to apply for legal status for two years, provided they find a sponsor inside the United States and pass a background check.

Under U.S. immigration law, the secretary of homeland security may grant parole to individuals who would otherwise be illegal in the United States. The program, launched in October 2022, leveraged that power to thousands of Venezuelans. Up to 30,000 people per month from the four countries who are paroled can come to the United States for two years and be allowed to work. They’re required to legally enter the United States and aren’t permitted to go to Mexico or Panama without authorization while their application is weighed.

Mexico, which already agreed to accept Venezuelan nationals that illegally crossed the border, has said that it will accept up to 30,000 illegal immigrants per month from the countries, according to the White House.

The program has led to a drop in Venezuelans entering the United States illegally, down to less than 250 per day from about 1,100 per day on average, according to U.S. officials.

Arizona Supreme Court Issues Response to Kari Lake’s Election Lawsuit

The Arizona Supreme Court on Wednesday denied GOP candidate Kari Lake’s petition to transfer her election lawsuit to the high court, saying that it will be heard before an appeals court.

“The Court notes that the Court of Appeals has entered a scheduling order directing respondents in the special action proceeding to file a response and has indicated that the matter will be conferenced, with possible oral argument, on January 24, 2023,” the Supreme Court wrote (pdf). “No good cause appears to transfer the matter to this Court.”

Both the appeal and Lake’s petition for special action without prejudice to seek an expedited review were denied, the Supreme Court ruled.

Last month, Lake filed a lawsuit against then-Secretary of State Katie Hobbs, Maricopa County supervisors, and other officials, arguing that issues that were reported during the Nov. 8 midterm election were enough to swing the gubernatorial race in her favor against Hobbs, a Democrat who was sworn-in as governor earlier this week. A Maricopa County judge, Peter Thompson, tossed her lawsuit on Dec. 24 and said she did not produce enough evidence.

Following the Supreme Court decision, Lake wrote Wednesday her case would be “going before the Appeals Court prior to the Arizona Supreme Court because it’s already been scheduled for review,” adding that she is “confident” the lawsuit will “end up in their hands” in the future. “We’re moving forward,” she added.

In a separate ruling, the three-judge panel in the Arizona Appeals Court wrote it would schedule a conference and oral arguments for Lake’s appeal on Jan. 24, according to an order (pdf) issued Jan. 3. But it noted that the “case may be resolved, however, prior to that date if the panel declines to accept jurisdiction on the special action.”

Lawyers for Lake wrote that “evidence put forward in this case, including the changing and conflicting testimony of Maricopa officials, and sworn testimony by whistleblowers employed by Maricopa” show that officials in the state’s most populous county did not verify mail-in ballot signatures, didn’t keep the proper chain-of-custody for thousands of ballots, and triggered “chaos” on Election Day due to ballot printing problems, according to her petition to the state Supreme Court.

Maricopa County Supervisor Bill Gates and County Recorder Stephen Richer said in a Nov. 8 news conference that tabulation errors were reported in dozens of polling sites across the county, telling voters to place their ballots in drop-boxes or find another location to vote. Hours later, the pair announced that those errors, which they blamed on tabulation printers, were solved and argued that no voters were disenfranchised.

Pro-Life Group Launches Private Investigation into Pro-Abortion Firebombing After Months Waiting on FBI

A pro-life group announced on Tuesday that it is hiring private investigators to uncover who firebombed its Buffalo office in June, citing months of “slow-walking” and “feign[ed] interest” from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) as its reason for launching an independent investigation.

On June 7, shortly after someone leaked the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision, shadowy suspects threw Molotov cocktails into CompassCare’s Buffalo office and scrawled, “Jane was here” on the side of the building — a slogan used to pay fealty to the radical pro-abortion group Jane’s Revenge. CompassCare said the attack injured two firefighters and caused half a million dollars in damage. Five months after the attack and a week after the midterm elections, in which abortion played a central role, FBI Buffalo announced a $25,000 reward to anyone who can give the agency information leading to arrests.

Exclusive: Texas Sues Biden Administration over Rule Making Americans Pay Immigration Welfare Costs

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) has filed a lawsuit against the Biden administration over its rule change allowing immigrants into the country who will be dependent on welfare, according to documents obtained by Breitbart News.

Federal immigration law has required a “public-charge” determination for immigrants, which bars them from staying in the country if they are likely to use welfare programs like food stamps, Medicaid, or government housing aid.

“The Biden Administration has demonstrated its intent not to enforce the law and to open the borders to illegal aliens who will be dependent upon welfare benefits,” a press release from Paxton’s office obtained by Breitbart News says.

Normally, immigrants provide financial proof that they would not sap taxpayer funds. The Biden administration’s rule “prevents consideration of statutorily required factors when determining whether an alien is likely to become a ‘public charge.’”

“The Biden Administration is committed to opening the borders to aliens who lack the ability to take care of themselves. Texans should not have to pay for these costly immigrants, nor should any other American,” Paxton said. “I will continue to defend the rule of law and fight to ensure that the massive costs of illegal immigration don’t further burden taxpayers.”

ECONOMY & BUSINESS

Amazon Announces 18,000 Job Cuts

Amazon informed staff on Wednesday that it plans to cut 18,000 jobs amid slowing consumer and corporate spending.

The cuts include workforce reductions already announced in November. The company had previously flagged that it would make additional cuts this year.

“Today, I wanted to share the outcome of these further reviews, which is the difficult decision to eliminate additional roles,” CEO Andy Jassy said in an employee memo. “Between the reductions we made in November and the ones we’re sharing today, we plan to eliminate just over 18,000 roles.”

The workforce eliminations are focused on the company’s devices and books business, as well as its people, experience, and technology organization, and Amazon Stores.

Jassy announced the cuts earlier than expected after an employee leaked the plans. The Wall Street Journal reported earlier on Wednesday that the company would reduce its workforce by 17,000 jobs.

“We typically wait to communicate about these outcomes until we can speak with the people who are directly impacted,” Jassy said. “However, because one of our teammates leaked this information externally, we decided it was better to share this news earlier so you can hear the details directly from me.”

REPORT: NFL Officially Cancels Bills-Bengals Game

The league has reportedly made an official decision.

The NFL has reportedly decided that the Jan. 2 Buffalo Bills-Cincinnati Bengals game that was suspended following Bills safety Damar Hamlin’s cardiac arrest will be cancelled, according to the Associated Press.

The sources who spoke with the AP did so on the condition of anonymity because the NFL is still trying to figure out what they’re going to do with playoff seedings, as well as scheduling. The NFL Players Association also has to approve the changes.

Tech Layoffs Continue: Woke Software Giant Salesforce to Lay Off 8,000 Employees

Salesforce, a software giant with a notoriously woke CEO, plans to lay off around 10 percent of its workforce, which would come to about 8,000 employees. It is the latest layoff by one of the Silicon Valley Masters of the Universe.

Salesforce, the largest private employer in San Francisco, has decided to shut down a number of offices, saying the company has grown too much during the Chinese coronavirus pandemic, according to a regulatory filing obtained by San Francisco Chronicle.

Another Elon Inferno: Tesla Mobile Supercharger with ‘Megapack’ Battery Bursts into Flames

A Tesla Megapack battery on a mobile Supercharger caught on fire and burned down in Baker, California, on New Year’s Day. Tesla’s mobile superchargers are charging stations built on trailers. Unfortunately, they seem to be as prone to battery fires as Elon Musk’s electric cars.

Electrek reports that a Tesla Megapack caught fire and burned down a mobile Supercharger at a charging station in Baker, California, on New Year’s Day. The mobile Supercharger, which consists of a trailer fitted with a Megapack battery and several Superchargers, was being used to provide extra capacity at the Baker Supercharger station during the holidays.

Experts Question: What If Elderly Transhuman Billionaires Actually Become Immortal?

Let’s be clear: modern science has done a lot of incredible things for human health. We live way longer than we used to, and quality of life is remaining far better, for far longer, than at any other point in history.

But there are a lot of wealthy people out there who don’t just want to live longer. They want to live forever, and they’re using their deep pockets to try to make it happen. In fact, Wired just declared that anti-aging research in 2023 could “kickstart the greatest revolution in medicine since the discovery of antibiotics.”

Could all that hype fall short? Sure, and it likely will. But it’s also possible that the quest for immortality could mark a grim new inflection point in the history of wealth.

That’s not just because it might mean that humanity will simply have to exist with the glare from an immortal Jeff Bezos’ glistening scalp for eternity, but because such technology might mean that people like Bezos, whose money equals a whole lot of power, would be able to continue compounding that wealth and power for, well, forever.

“Suppose, for example, we had a kind of vaccine for the pandemic of age,” Christopher Wareham, a bioethicist at Utrecht University who studies the ethics of aging, told The Financial Times. “This is going to potentially exacerbate all the kinds of existing inequalities that we have… The longer you’re around, the more your wealth compounds, and the wealthier you are, the more political influence you have.”

Shock Study: Social Media Use CHANGES The BRAINS Of Teenagers

A recent study by psychologists shows that the regular use of social media is linked to changes in the brains of teenagers. This is especially troubling in light of the fact that the most popular social media platform for American teenagers is China’s TikTok, which pushes harmful messaging on teens as soon as they sign up for an account.

The effects of social media on children’s developing brains has long been a topic of concern for parents and policymakers. Now, the New York Times reports that a new study by neuroscientists at the University of North Carolina has shed some light on the issue, using brain scans to track the effects of social media use on middle school students aged 12 to 15, a period of rapid brain development.

The study found that children who regularly checked their social media feed at around age 12 showed increased sensitivity to social rewards from their peers over time. In contrast, teenagers with less engagement in social media showed a declining interest in social rewards. While the study cannot make definitive causal claims about the effects of social media on the brain, the authors suggest that the findings could potentially have long-term consequences well into adulthood.

The study was conducted on a diverse group of 169 students from a middle school in rural North Carolina. The students were split into three groups based on their reported frequency of social media use: habitual (checking feeds 15 or more times a day), moderate (checking 1-14 times a day), and nonhabitual (checking less than once a day). The subjects received full brain scans at approximately one-year intervals as they played a game that displayed rewards and punishment in the form of smiling or scowling peers.

While playing the game, habitual social media users showed increased activation in three areas of the brain:

  • Reward-processing circuits, which also respond to experiences such as winning money or risk-taking behavior.
  • Brain regions that determine what stands out in the environment.
  • The prefrontal cortex, which helps with regulation and control.

These changes in brain function suggest that teenagers who frequently check their social media feeds may become “hypersensitive to feedback from their peers,” according to Dr. Eva Telzer, an associate professor of psychology and neuroscience at the University of North Carolina and one of the authors of the study.

However, whether these brain changes are beneficial or harmful is not yet clear. On the one hand, increased social sensitivity could be seen as adaptive, indicating that the teenagers are learning to connect with others. On the other hand, increased social sensitivity may lead to other issues, such as social anxiety and depression.

Breitbart News has previously reported that apps such as TikTok have been found to be harmful to teen mental health. In December, Breitbart News reported that a study by the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) revealed that TikTok’s algorithms are recommending self-harm and eating disorder content to new users shortly after they join the platform.

The study involved researchers creating TikTok accounts and posing as 13-year-old users interested in body image and mental health content. The results showed that within just 2.6 minutes of joining the app, TikTok’s algorithms began to recommend suicidal content to the new accounts. Additionally, eating disorder content was recommended within as little as eight minutes.

Want to Know How to Loosen Your Tight Hip Muscles?

Sitting for long periods can cause your hip flexors to shorten up and become tight, leading to problems with posture and back pain

Exercises that target your hip muscles will help to open your hips to build flexibility, reduce pain and prevent injuries

Hip exercises and stretches may help reduce patellofemoral pain (PFP) and iliotibial (IT) band syndrome

Can You Pass the Flexibility Test?

Theresa Larson, physical therapist and movement health expert, shared a simple five-stretch test that determines if you have sufficient flexibility in your neck, back, hips, calves and ankles

Shortened and tight muscles can lead to joint immobility, loss of function, and pain such as upper crossed syndrome from sitting hunched over a computer that results in upper back pain and chest muscle tightness

Stretching is part of a well-balanced fitness routine and should be done at the end of your workout, after active recovery or active cooldown. Since your muscles are warmed up, be careful not to overstretch and cause microtears in the muscle, tendon or ligaments

Low back pain is one of the most common complaints that brings patients to their physician and causes missed days at work. Refrain from using a standing toe touch to stretch your lower back since it increases the load on your lower back. Instead, use these three gentle stretches

“Population Bomb” Paul Ehrlich Blathers On About The “End Of Civilization”

The next several decades “will be the end of the kind of civilization we’re used to,” according to Stanford University biologist Paul Ehrlich whose long-held apocalyptic prophecy was recently featured on the most-watched newsmagazine on TV.

Appearing on CBS’ 60 Minutes on Sunday, notorious population prophet of doom Paul Ehrlich continued to present his failed theories.

When told by CBS correspondent Scott Pelley that there is currently “no political will” to follow any of his recommendations, Ehrlich admitted that was the case and warned of the repercussions for such environmental apathy.

“I know there’s no political will to do any of the things that I’m concerned with, which is exactly why I and the vast majority of my colleagues think we’ve had it — that the next few decades will be the end of the kind of civilization we’re used to,” he said.

Ehrlich also warned that humanity is “not sustainable to maintain our lifestyle — yours and mine,” claiming that “for the entire planet you’d need five more Earths [and it’s] not clear where they’re going to come from.”

The program continued by warning of a “sixth mass extinction” attributed to “humanity’s feasting on resources” which has “tripled” over the last 50 years.

“We’re already consuming 175% of what the Earth can regenerate,” Pelley stated.

“And consider half of humanity — about four billion — live on less than $10 a day,” he added. “They aspire to cars, air conditioning, and a rich diet….”

Ehrlich — who has defended mass sterilization, sex-selective abortion, and infanticide — is the author of the infamous 1968 eco-doom bestseller The Population Bomb, which generated mass hysteria over the future of the world and the earth’s ability to sustain human life, yet was demonstrably proved wrong.

In the book, he prophesied that hundreds of millions would starve to death in the 1970s (65 million of whom would be Americans); that already-overpopulated India was doomed; and that odds were fair that “England will not exist in the year 2000.”

Ehrlich concluded that “sometime in the next 15 years, the end will come,” as “an utter breakdown of the capacity of the planet to support humanity” occurs.

He has also argued that allowing women to have as many children as they desire is similar to letting people “throw as much of their garbage into their neighbor’s backyard as they want.”

Sudden Death: The No. 1 Cause of Death for Under 65s in 2021

Mounting evidence shows the COVID shots are destroying people’s immune systems and are triggering turbo-charged cancers

A survey by Steve Kirsch found sudden death is the No. 1 cause of death among those under the age of 65 who got the COVID jab

Myocarditis as a cause of death is now registering across all age ranges but only for the vaccinated. Cardiac-related deaths are also significantly elevated among younger people (under 65) who got the jab compared to their unjabbed peers

Recent research shows repeated jabs trigger a switch in the types of antibodies your body produces and lower your ability to clear viruses. By switching from spike-specific neutralizing IgG antibodies to IgG4 antibodies, your body switches from tumor suppression mode into tumor progression mode

In addition to the potential for cancer cells to run amok, IgG4 dominance may also have severe autoimmune implications, as the COVID jab spike protein share similarities with human proteins

Cause of Damar Hamlin’s Cardiac Arrest Still Not Clear, Doctor Says

Doctors with the University of Cincinnati Medical Center said tests are ongoing to determine the cause of Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin’s cardiac arrest during Monday night’s game.

A “workup is ongoing,” William Knight, lead physician and professor of emergency medicine at UC Health, said in a news conference Thursday. “We do not have definitive answers as to the etiology of the arrest, and tests will continue to progress.”

Hamlin, 24, collapsed to the field during the first quarter of the Bills-Cincinnati Bengals game on Monday. As he spent about 15 minutes on the field, medical personnel performed CPR on him and used an automated external defibrillator to restart his heart, according to the Bills in a Tuesday update.

“There’s been substantial improvement in his condition over the past 24 hours,” Dr. Timothy Pritts, division chief of general surgery at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, said at the conference. “We had significant concern about him after the injury and after the event that happened on the field, but he’s making substantial progress.”

Hamlin, he added, is “beginning to awaken, and it appears that his neurological condition and function is intact.” Those who survive cardiac arrest often are left with neurological and brain problems, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Paxlovid, Advertised for Mass Use, Has Contraindications With Hundreds of Drugs

One of the most robustly campaigned and well-known drugs for treating COVID is Paxlovid. Yet the drug’s limited clinical studies and numerous drug interactions raise questions of safety for COVID patients.

Approved for Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) in December 2021 and promoted by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), health officials, and politicians alike, Paxlovid is fast becoming the one-track drug for early COVID treatment.

Paxlovid’s EPIC-HR clinical trial, sponsored by Pfizer, revealed that those who took the drug were 89 percent less likely to develop severe COVID than those who took a placebo. Those who took Paxlovid also had lower quantities of the SARS-CoV-2 virus detected after five days of treatment.

With such impressive results, the FDA made swift moves to promote the prescription of Paxlovid—extending to pharmacists the authority to prescribe Paxlovid beginning in July 2022.

This raised concerns and disapproval from some clinicians.

Though laws in some states allow pharmacists to prescribe a limited number of drugs, such as contraceptives and naloxone, prescribing medication is primarily the responsibility of doctors.

Diagnostic and interventional cardiologist Dr. Jack Askins from Wichita Heart Center told The Epoch Times that it was unprecedented for pharmacists to be given authority to prescribe EUA medication.

Physicians are familiar with their patient’s medical histories, intolerances, allergies, and other medications the patient is taking and would be able to avoid potentially dangerous adverse effects from drug interactions. Though pharmacists can access medical records electronically, a study wrote that “pharmacists’ access to patient information is not adequate for competent prescribing.”

The FDA has required pharmacists who prescribe Paxlovid to have access to the patient’s medical history and a list of all the drugs the patient is taking.

Pharmacists taking on the role of physicians through their authority to prescribe Paxlovid is only one aspect of clinicians’ concerns about the drug; the more significant problem is a multitude of potential drug interactions.

Rep. Schiff Pressured Twitter to Ban Journalist, New Messages Show

A top Democrat pressured Twitter to ban a journalist from the social media platform, according to newly released messages.

Rep. Adam Schiff’s (D-Calif.) office pressured Twitter in 2020 to suspend investigative journalist Paul Sperry’s account, the messages show.

Schiff, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee at the time, wanted “many accounts” allegedly linked to QAnon suspended, including Sperry’s, one message shows.

Schiff’s office claimed that Sperry and the other accounts had “repeatedly promoted false QAnon conspiracies and harassed [redacted].”

QAnon refers to a movement of people who promote conspiracy theories related to government officials and other elite figures, some of which have turned out to be true.

The message also shows Schiff’s office wanting the removal of “any and all content” about staff on the House Intelligence Committee, including posts, shared content, and reactions to that content.

The message, an internal Twitter email made public by journalist Matt Taibbi, shows a Twitter official saying “this isn’t feasible/we don’t do this” to the latter request.

Regarding the request to ban Sperry and the other accounts, the official said, “We’ll review these accounts again but I believe [redacted] mentioned only one actually qualified for suspension.”
