Bangladesh cuts mobile internet as student protests over jobs intensify

Police fire tear gas at students in Dhaka who are demonstrating against civil service hiring rules they call discriminatory.

Bangladesh has suspended some mobile internet services, with police firing tear gas at student protesters as violent clashes over civil service hiring quotas continue to rock the country.

The nationwide protests showed no signs of abating on Thursday, with at least 17 people reported dead and authorities blocking mobile services across most of the South Asian country

Zunaid Ahmed Palak, the junior information technology minister, said mobile internet had been “temporarily suspended” owing to “various rumours” and the “unstable situation created” on social media.

Services would be restored once the situation returned to normal, he added. Two days earlier, internet providers had cut off access to Facebook – the protesters’ key organising tool.

On Thursday morning, police fired tear gas canisters at students near BRAC University in the capital, Dhaka. Tear gas was also deployed against stone-throwing students who blocked a main highway in the southern port city of Chittagong.

“The situation is still volatile and restless,” said Al Jazeera’s Tanvir Chowdhury, reporting from Dhaka. “We know the protests are spreading in different parts of the city and … I’ve got reports of protests in other parts of the country.”

The unrest continued after students called for a nationwide shutdown on Wednesday evening, with the support of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), whose headquarters have been raided by police.

Shops and offices were open in Dhaka but there were fewer buses on the streets as the students’ shutdown call appeared to draw a limited response.

US military shuts down problematic Gaza aid pier, shifts to Israeli port

After operating for fewer than 25 days, the US-built Gaza aid pier will be dismantled, marking the end of a costly mission marked by recurring weather and security challenges.

The United States military has said its mission to install and operate a temporary, floating pier off the coast of Gaza to bring humanitarian aid to Palestinians has ended.

The $230m trouble-prone pier had to be removed repeatedly from Gaza’s shore because of poor weather conditions since its initial installation in mid-May.

US military officials said on Wednesday that the pier had achieved its mission despite United Nations estimates that 96 percent of Gaza’s population is food insecure, and one in five Palestinians, or about 495,000 people, face starvation amid Israel’s nine-month war on the territory.

“Our assessment is that the temporary pier has achieved its intended effect to surge a very high volume of aid into Gaza and ensure that aid reaches the civilians in Gaza in a quick manner,” US Navy Vice Admiral Brad Cooper, the deputy commander of US Central Command, told a news briefing.

“The maritime surge mission involving the pier is complete. So there’s no more need to use the pier,” Cooper said, adding that aid intended for Gaza would now be shipped through Israel’s Port of Ashdod.

Aid groups had criticised the 370-metre (1,200-foot) floating structure as a costly distraction, saying the US should have concentrated on pressuring Israel to allow more aid through Gaza’s land borders.

Given the dire situation, land transport routes were the only effective option to address the level of humanitarian need in war-torn Gaza, the UN and aid groups said.

Five Just Stop Oil activists receive record sentences for planning to block M25

Campaigners receive longest ever sentences for non-violent protest after being convicted of conspiracy to cause public nuisance

Five supporters of the Just Stop Oil climate campaign who conspired to cause gridlock on London’s orbital motorway have been sentenced to lengthy jail terms.

Roger Hallam, Daniel Shaw, Louise Lancaster, Lucia Whittaker De Abreu and Cressida Gethin were found guilty last week of conspiracy to cause a public nuisance for coordinating direct action protests on the M25 over four days in November 2022.

US senator to resign over corruption conviction – media

Democrat Robert Menendez was found guilty on 16 federal charges after a two-month corruption trial

New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez has told allies that he will resign from Congress rather than face a potential expulsion vote after being convicted on multiple corruption charges, NBC News reported Wednesday, citing two people familiar with the discussions.

Earlier this week, the 12-member jury in New York found the lawmaker guilty on all 16 counts of bribery, wire fraud, extortion, acting as a foreign agent, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy. Menendez, who pleaded not guilty to the federal charges, is potentially facing decades in prison. The judge scheduled the senator’s sentencing date for October 29.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, among others in his party, had already called on Menendez “do what is right for his constituents, the Senate, and our country, and resign.”

The trial stemmed from allegations that the lawmaker had used his position to benefit a number of New Jersey businessmen, as well as the Egyptian and Qatari governments, in exchange for bribes, gold bars, and other luxury items.

Two businessmen – Wael Hana and Fred Daibes – were also convicted on multiple charges, while Jose Uribe pleaded guilty and testified against Menendez during the trial. The senator’s wife Nadine Menendez was also charged, but will go to trial later due to a breast cancer diagnosis.

Biden on verge of Supreme action: ‘Major initiative on limiting the court’

Joe Biden, in what appears to be an effort to shore up and solidify his leftist voting base, is considering dramatic changes to the U.S. Supreme Court in the run-up to the 2024 presidential election.

Biden, trailing Republican nominee President Donald Trump in most polling these days, has a disorganized party behind him, following his displays of disorientation, confusion and worse in recent appearances, including where he called Ukraine’s leader “President Putin” and his own vice president “Trump.”

Reports explain he wants to interfere in the judiciary by demanding term limits for justices and imposing procedures where the executive or legislative branches could retaliate against justices for actions and opinions they dislike – under the guise of an “enforceable” code of ethics, actions considered to be aimed at undermining the independence of the judiciary.

One report pointed out, “Shaking up the Supreme Court may be Biden’s way of trying to woo progressives back into his camp who are angry about some of the Supreme Court’s recent decisions, including the immunity ruling and the change in federal abortion laws with the overturn of Roe v. Wade in 2022.”

Extremists like U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., have repeatedly attacked the court for its ruling that the Roe v. Wade decision that originally created an abortion “right” in the Constitution was faulty, and its decision that presidents have immunity for most acts while in office.

It was the Washington Post that said its sources confirmed Biden’s pre-election scheme to propose changes to the court as well as push for a constitutional amendment that would eliminate immunity for presidents.

Reports said Biden launched the agenda during an online discussion with members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

“I’m going to need your help on the Supreme Court … I’m about to come out with a major initiative on limiting the court.”

Trump responded with a statement in which he accused Democrats of “illegal and unConstitutional attack on our SACRED United States Supreme Court.”

WATCH: Secret Service director flees RNC when confronted by GOP senators about Trump shooting

Republican senators confronted the embattled head of the Secret Service on Wednesday at the Republican National Convention here.

“You owe President Trump answers,” Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., shouted after Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle at the RNC.

While Cheatle walked through the Fiserv Forum convention center, Blackburn, along with Sens. John Barrasso of Wyoming, James Lankford of Oklahoma, and Kevin Cramer of North Dakota called on her to give the American people answers after a gunman’s attempt to kill former President Donald Trump nearly succeeded Saturday evening at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Moments before Cheatle briskly walked away from the four senators, they stood around her and asked why Trump was allowed to take the stage at the rally after the Secret Service was alerted to the threat of a shooter 10 minutes earlier, the New York Post reported Wednesday.

“Why would anyone allow the president to go on stage when you know that you’ve got a potential threat … ?,” Blackburn pressed Cheatle, who was appointed by President Joe Biden.

“I am going to answer your questions … at the appropriate forum,” Cheatle told the four senators, according to a video of the confrontation.

The video shows Secret Service director telling the lawmakers that she needs to leave while the GOP leaders follow and continue asking questions.

‘The best is yet to come!’ Peter Navarro freed from prison, addresses RNC

‘Every Democrat disengaged from, disenfranchised by, or disgusted with Joe Biden’s America and the radical left turn that the elites of the Democratic Party have taken – come on down’

Peter Navarro, the first high-ranking Trump aide to be imprisoned by the Biden administration, will speak at the Republican National Convention Wednesday, just hours after his release from prison.

“The best is yet to come!” wrote Team Navarro on Peter’s X page.

The trade adviser to President Donald Trump was put behind bars for refusing to kowtow to ex-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s partisan commission she set up essentially to blame Trump for the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol.

Wednesday’s theme at the RNC focuses on foreign policy issues.

Upon his release, Navarro told reporters: “We have to unite this country and every Democrat disengaged from, disenfranchised by, or disgusted with Joe Biden’s America and the radical left turn that the elites of the Democratic Party have taken – come on down.”

1000s Of Marylanders Furious About Eminent Domain Risk For New Transmission Line Powering AI Data Centers

Thousands of Marylanders are discovering firsthand the dark side of ‘The Next AI Trade,’ in which power grids must be upgraded and expanded to handle increased load demand from AI data centers and other electrification trends. This expansion involves eminent domain and the destruction of farmland and forests.

Strict climate change rules from progressive lawmakers in Annapolis are some of the main drivers in the chaos unfolding across three counties in the blue state, as these rules discourage the development of new fossil fuel power plants, forcing power companies to expand transmission systems to import electricity from surrounding states versus building clean NatGas power generators with carbon capture systems near areas where AI data centers are being constructed.

Pro-subs are all too familiar with our ‘powering up America’ theme dubbed the “The Next AI Trade.” However, the situation playing out in Maryland has revealed a dark side to this theme, which we were the first to report last week in a note titled “Dark Side Of ‘The Next AI Trade’: Seizing Private Property For Transmission Lines.”

Did Trump’s Shooter Have Help?

Okay, so we are supposed to believe that a 20-year-old kid “who was turned away from his high school rifle club for being a ‘comically bad’ shot” and that had no military training whatsoever was able to pull this off all by himself?  We are being told that it was “a mistake” that the ideal location for a sniper to be located was left unguarded, and somehow Thomas Matthew Crooks was able to identify this oversight and position himself accordingly.  Just 150 yards away from where Donald Trump would be speaking, Crooks was able to climb on to a roof with a rifle and stay there for nearly half an hour before he finally started shooting at Trump.  Either this was a cataclysmic security failure, or Crooks had some help somewhere along the way.

According to a former Secret Service agent who was in charge of Vice President Al Gore’s security detail during the Clinton administration, there should have been Secret Service personnel on that roof and “someone dropped the ball”

Before a high-profile person like Trump attends an event and needs Secret Service protection, the agency conducts a security survey that also takes nearby buildings into account.

William Pickle, a former special agent in charge of the Secret Service’s vice presidential protection division who oversaw Vice President Al Gore’s detail, told USA Today that something was clearly missed. “We know who’s there, why they’re there, we have control over those buildings,” Pickle said. “It seems like somewhere in this security survey, someone dropped the ball on those particular buildings.”

Was this just a mistake, or was it done on purpose?

“So something happened, and I’m not pointing fingers at anyone. It’s too obvious that this guy had help getting there. So whether someone turned a blind eye or it was strategically planned, I mean, it had to be planned to a certain level because events like that and security like that, it’s not a small thing. And that is the most obvious place to be.”

U.S. Representative Cory Mills also served as a sniper, and during a recent interview he shocked a CNN host by also suggesting that Crooks probably had help…

Former sniper and defense contractor Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL) triggered a CNN host on Tuesday after suggesting that “intentional” failures may have resulted in the assassination attempt on Donald Trump on Saturday.

“The amount of negligence, the amount of mistakes that was made here, I have a very difficult time not leaning myself towards this was intentional, as opposed to fecklessness,” Mills told anchor Kate Bolduan.

“If I have a building 160 yards perfectly adjacent to the stage, that’s an obvious threat,” he continued. “Especially with an elevated position that has overwatch? That’s a sniper’s paradise.“

Will we ever get the truth?

I don’t know.

But as Matt Walsh has aptly pointed out, the official story does not seem to be holding up…

Here’s the official story so far:

a random 20 year old acting completely alone walked within 150 yards of a presidential campaign rally with a rifle, climbed onto a rooftop in full view of Secret Service snipers, set up his shot and fired without anyone intervening and with no help from anyone.

This 20 year old is also so politically radical as to attempt an assassination and yet not radical enough to have ever posted any political writings or commentary on any social media site ever in his life.

He also wrote no manifesto and left behind no indication about why he did it.

The American people deserve a full investigation of this matter.

Biden under new pressure from top Democrats as Covid halts campaign

President Joe Biden faces new questions over his candidacy in the November election – with his campaign events currently on pause due to a Covid-19 infection.

The top two Democrats in the US Congress, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, are both reported to have met him individually to express concerns over his bid for the White House.

Nancy Pelosi, the former House Speaker, has also privately told him that he cannot beat Donald Trump in November’s election, according to CNN.

Mr Biden’s re-election attempt was already being buffeted by growing dissent among top Democrats after his disastrous debate performance against Donald Trump last month.

Announcing his Covid infection on Wednesday, Mr Biden’s press secretary said the 81-year-old was facing mild symptoms.

He would isolate at his home in Delaware while carrying out “all of his duties fully”, said Karine Jean-Pierre. She added that the president was vaccinated and boosted. He has tested positive for Covid twice before.

Mr Biden was seen earlier in the day visiting supporters in Las Vegas and speaking at an event. He was forced to cancel a speech later in the day at UnidosUS, a Latino civil rights organisation.

It marked a sudden and debilitating end to a trip that was supposed to see Mr Biden hitting the campaign trail again with full force – after the pause sparked by the attempted assassination of his rival Trump.

The president had spent time in Las Vegas trying to revive his appeal among Hispanic voters, with whom his poll lead has slipped since 2020.

Later on Wednesday, he was seen moving slowly and cautiously up the steps to Air Force One. He was not wearing a mask. As he boarded the plane, he was heard to say: “Good, I feel good.”

Former Classmate Says Shooter Was ‘Passionate’ About Politics, Insinuated He Was Stupid for Supporting Trump

A Hispanic ex-classmate of shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks said he insinuated he was stupid for supporting former President Donald Trump in an interview with Fox News Digital.

Vincent Taormina told the outlet that Crooks, 20, was “passionate” about politics but hated “all” politicians.

“He just did not like politicians, especially with the choices that we’ve had. He did not like our politicians,” Taormina said.He said in 2016 — when Crooks would have been about 16 years old — that he “disliked all of them.”

Taormina did not specify when he spoke to Crooks about Trump but said, “I brought up the fact that I’m Hispanic and, you know, I’m for Trump. And he said, ‘Well you’re Hispanic, so shouldn’t you hate Trump?’”

Taormina said he responded that Trump was a great president, and Crooks “insinuated that I was stupid.”

“He was a know-it-all,” he added. “He acted like he knew everything, especially politics-related.”

“He was real smug, arrogant whenever he was talking…It got under my skin a lot,” Taormina said.

He said Crooks was not a loner or bullied and had a friend group who were “definitely the type, and they did, make threats to shoot up our school.”

Synthetic GMO Milk Is Hitting Store Shelves Watch Out for These Dairy Brands

In recent years, the landscape of our grocery aisles has been quietly but significantly altered. A new player has entered the dairy section: synthetic GMO dairy products. This emergence is not just a minor shift in food technology but a fundamental change in what we consume. Across the globe, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have stirred controversy and faced bans in nearly 20 countries, spanning Europe, Asia, South America, and parts of Canada. Yet, despite these widespread apprehensions, genetically altered dairy products are making their way into our stores and homes.

A notable example is the company Perfect Day, which has pioneered the use of 3D printed milk proteins for creating these synthetic dairy items. Their approach, which they term ‘precision fermentation’, is a sophisticated form of genetic engineering known as ‘synthetic biology’ or ‘synbio’. These 3D printed GMO proteins have recently found their way into popular ice cream brands, often without any clear labeling to inform consumers.

The introduction of these products raises profound questions. What are the implications of consuming such radically altered food items? The non-profit organization GMO Free USA has been vocal about the potential risks, highlighting the lack of premarket safety testing and the absence of mandatory GMO labeling. Their concerns are not unfounded, considering the discovery of numerous unknown compounds in these synthetic milk products, compounds whose safety profiles are yet to be thoroughly evaluated by regulatory bodies like the FDA.

As we stand at the crossroads of this new food technology, it’s imperative to examine what’s at stake. This article aims to shed light on the critical aspects of synthetic GMO dairy products, urging consumers to be vigilant and informed.

New GMO Alert: How Long Before Amber Waves of (GMO) Grain Flood the Market?

Wheat is one of the top three most significant staple foods in the world. According to US Wheat Associates, global wheat consumption is projected to total 802.4 million metric tons, up 2.03 MMT from last year; and global wheat production in 2024/25 is projected to top 798 MMT, up from 10.5 MMT from last year.

More than 80 countries cultivate wheat, with China, India, Russia, and the US being the top producers. According to the USDA, the US, EU, Canada, Australia, Argentina, Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan account for 90% of wheat exports worldwide.

The development of genetically modified wheat has historically been controversial. As noted in our July 2022 New GMO Alert, in the 1990s, Monsanto began conducting field trials of genetically modified wheat in the US. However, the company voluntarily withdrew its cultivation request based on the concerns of wheat farmers regarding the risk of potential contamination and its impact on US wheat exports.

Those concerns were not unfounded, as demonstrated in subsequent years by at least five reports of genetically modified wheat contamination in the US and Canada, which resulted in wheat export disruptions in the form of suspensions and/or increased inspection on the part of trading partners. Those concerns are still relevant, as evidenced by the fact that the USDA has yet to approve the genetically modified HB4 wheat for cultivation.

Because of wheat’s significance and ubiquity, as well as its role in the global marketplace, we monitor genetically modified wheat development, production, and acceptance very closely. Recently, we have seen some significant shifts. Below are some updates on the development and cultivation of genetically modified wheat worldwide.

Castor Oil May Be Helpful in the Treatment of Dry Eye Disease

Castor oil comes from the seeds of the castor bean plant, Ricinus communis. It’s a pale-yellow liquid with a distinct taste and odor, primarily composed of ricinoleic acid, which accounts for about 90% of its fatty acid content.

Known for its various industrial, medicinal and cosmetic uses, castor oil has been utilized for centuries. Industrially, castor oil is used as a lubricant and in the production of soaps, paints, inks and waxes. Medicinally, it’s commonly used as a laxative to relieve occasional constipation. Researchers with the University of Auckland in New Zealand also tested it in the treatment of dry eye disease, with promising results.

Dry Eye Syndrome Is Increasing in Young and Old

Dry eye disease, also known as dry eye syndrome or keratoconjunctivitis sicca, is a common condition that occurs when your eyes don’t produce enough tears or when your tears evaporate too quickly. This results in inflammation and damage to your eye’s surface, leading to discomfort and vision problems.

Worldwide, prevalence is up to 50% in certain regions,1 with risk increasing at age 50 and over. Other risk factors include menopause, autoimmune diseases, extended screen time and wearing contact lenses.

In New Zealand, it’s estimated that 58% of people over age 50 have dry eye disease,2 for instance, while in the U.S. the condition is increasing in both young and old adults, “making it imperative that clinicians figure out how best to treat it,” noted the American Academy of Ophthalmology.3

Blepharitis, an inflammation of the eyelids, particularly at the base of the eyelashes, is one of the most common causes of dry eye disease, accounting for more than 80% of cases, according to the University of Auckland.4

“Currently, patients are left grappling with symptoms of dryness, grittiness and, in some cases, watery eyes that feel uncomfortable impacting on their quality of life and work productivity,” the study’s lead clinical investigator Catherine Jennings explained. “Often patients are left feeling helpless when attempting to manage a chronic condition.”5

While antibacterial and anti-inflammatory medications are available for treatment, antimicrobial resistance and significant side effects make them unsuitable for long-term use. University of Auckland researchers instead tested cold-pressed castor oil enhanced with mānuka and kanuka oils, applied using a rollerball applicator, for treatment.

Study Shows Castor Oil Benefits Blepharitis, Dry Eye Disease

The study involved 26 people with signs of blepharitis. They applied a 100% cold pressed castor oil formulation to the eyelid of one eye twice daily for four weeks.6

At the start, there were no differences between the treated and control eyes. However, after four weeks of treatment, there was a significant improvement in dry eye symptoms in the eyes treated with castor oil. The treated eyes had reduced eyelid swelling, visible blood vessels, tangled eyelashes, eyelash loss, dandruff-like flakes and eyelid inflammation.

Castor oil treatment also led to less staphylococcal and seborrheic crusting on the eyelashes compared to the control eyes. Further, there were no negative side effects reported. According to the study:7

“Topical castor oil application effected significant improvements in ocular surface signs and symptoms in patients with blepharitis. The favorable therapeutic profile would suggest that castor oil demonstrates promise as a potential treatment for blepharitis, and support the conduct of further efficacy trials with longer follow up.”

The researchers are now conducting a double-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled study to look further into the effects of castor oil on dry eye and eyelash crusting.8 Study author Jennifer Craig, head of the University of Auckland’s Ocular Surface Laboratory, said:9

“Castor oil has been proposed as a natural product that could offer a safe, effective and easy-to-use alternative to existing therapies.

My hope is this study will produce evidence-based guidance for clinicians with regard to offering castor oil as a possible management option for patients suffering from blepharitis, so they continue to enjoy a great quality of life, read the books they love, be productive in their work environment and enjoy other visual hobbies.”

Craig and colleagues wrote a review about the therapeutic potential of castor oil in managing blepharitis and dry eye, as well as meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), which causes dryness in the eyes, in 2020, noting:10

“Castor oil is deemed safe and tolerable, with strong anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, anti-nociceptive, analgesic, antioxidant, wound healing and vaso-constrictive properties. Its main constituent, ricinoleic acid, has a bipolar molecular structure that promotes the formation of esters, amides and polymers.

These can supplement deficient physiological tear film lipids, enabling enhanced lipid spreading characteristics and reducing aqueous tear evaporation. Studies reveal that castor oil applied topically to the ocular surface has a prolonged residence time, facilitating increased tear film lipid layer thickness, stability, improved ocular surface staining and symptoms.”

Nantucket Closes Beaches After Wind Turbine Breaks

A wind turbine blade has broken off the coast of Nantucket. The cause isn’t clear, but the effect is: Debris has been washing up on the shores of the island, and federal authorities say operations at the Vineyard Wind project “are shut down until further notice,” the Nantucket Current reports. Beaches on the island’s south shore were closed to swimmers Tuesday morning after residents reported seeing fiberglass and pieces of green and white foam. “You can walk on the beaches; however, we strongly recommend you wear footwear due to sharp, fiberglass shards and debris,” said Harbormaster Sheila Lucey.

Vineyard Wind, the country’s second large-scale wind farm project, is still under construction but started generating electricity earlier this year, reports the New York Times. The turbines have blades 351 feet long. A rep for the company tells the Times that the damaged one broke around 65 feet from its root, but “nearly the entirety of the blade remains affixed to the turbine and has not fallen into the water.” The company has deployed teams to pick up fragments from Nantucket beaches. It is also working with the Coast Guard to keep boats away from the damaged turbine.

Banana Peel Fertilizer + 9 More Banana Peel Uses In The Garden

You take scraps from your kitchen that you’d typically throw away, mix them with microbes and air, and dry scraps from your yard that you’d normally throw away, and BOOM – you’ve made black gold that makes your plants grow like crazy.

And this is why I’m also amazed by banana peels.

Instead of pitching that peel, I mix it with water and time, and I’ve got banana peel fertilizer. Banana peels are arguably the most useful kitchen scrap you can use in your garden.

It turns out that the most mediocre of drops in Mario Kart, the humble banana peel, is a veritable gardening gold mine.

After reading this article, I hope you’ll never throw away another banana peel.

Nearly every gardener knows the macronutrient trifecta – nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.

These three nutrients are so essential to plant growth and health. So much so that this is why commercially made fertilizers always have the fertilizer grade on the packaging.

Of course, each plant’s nutrient needs vary, but you’d be surprised how many of them do exceptionally well when fed banana peel fertilizer
