Today’s Top 5:

1.Florida Issues Statewide Emergency Malaria Alert

The Florida Department of Health issued a statewide alert after four people in Sarasota contracted malaria in locally transmitted cases, coming a day after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a similar notice for Florida and Texas.

“All individuals have been treated and have recovered. Malaria is transmitted through infected mosquitoes,” Florida’s Department of Health stated in a release issued June 27.

2.Biden Administration’s Regulations Cost US Households Nearly $10,000 Each, Study Finds

The Biden adminstration’s regulatory burdens have cost almost $10,000 for each American household, standing in contrast to the Trump administration, which reduced such costs, according to a recent report by the Committee to Unleash Prosperity.

“The Biden administration has so far been adding regulatory costs at a rate of $617 billion per year of rulemaking, not counting regulatory costs created by statutes and other nonrule regulatory actions,” the June 2023 report (pdf) said. “Assuming that the United States has 123 million households, the amount is equivalent to about $9,600 per household for the rules finalized in 2021 and 2022.” In addition, the Biden administration has more policies and regulations in the pipeline that could skyrocket regulatory costs, it warned.

“If its rulemaking costs accelerate at the same pace that the Obama administration’s did, the result after eight years would be a cumulative $7 trillion, which is almost $60,000 per household.”

3.Supreme Court Strikes Down Race-Based Admissions at Colleges

The Supreme Court struck down on June 29 the use of racially discriminatory admissions policies at U.S. colleges.

The 6–3 decision ends the use of so-called affirmative action in higher education, a longtime goal of conservatives.

The ruling will be felt immediately as a million high school students begin applying for fall acceptance at the nation’s colleges and universities. Students may reportedly avoid stating their race or ethnicity in the Common App, which many use to apply to multiple schools at once.

Chief Justice John Roberts wrote (pdf) for the court that, for too long, universities have “concluded, wrongly, that the touchstone of an individual’s identity is not challenges bested, skills built, or lessons learned but the color of their skin.”

“Our constitutional history does not tolerate that choice,” he wrote.

In a footnote, Roberts carved out an exception in the ruling for military academies.

(The full decision, and the concurring opinions and the dissents, may be found here.)

4.Justice Jackson’s Dissent: ‘Our Country Has Never Been Colorblind’

Associate Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, President Joe Biden’s nominee to the Supreme Court, dissented in strident terms from Thursday’s decision striking down racial preferences in college admissions decisions.

Brown accused the Court’s six conservative justices of pretending that the U.S. is a “colorblind” society, and ignoring pervasive racial inequalities that persist even in the absence of formal racial discrimination laws.

She outlined a history of black suffering in America, from slavery to sharecropping, from Jim Crow to redlining: “The race-based gaps that first developed centuries ago are echoes from the past that still exist today.”

She added (original emphasis):

To demand that colleges ignore race in today’s admissions practices—and thus disregard the fact that racial disparities may have mattered for where some applicants find themselves today—is not only an affront to the dignity of those students for whom race matters. It also condemns our society to never escape the past that explains how and why race matters to the very concept of who “merits” admission.

Describing the use of race in admissions at Harvard and the University of North Carolina as a “plus” factor (and ignoring the burden suffered by Asian-Americans and others harmed by the policy), she argued that there were “universal” benefits to using race in college admissions policies, not just for the beneficiaries.

“Do not miss the point that ensuring a diverse student body in higher education helps everyone, not just those who, due to their race, have directly inherited distinct disadvantages with respect to their health, wealth, and wellbeing,” she wrote (original emphasis).

She argued that “race blindness … will delay the day that every American has an equal opportunity to thrive, regardless of race.”

5.ANALYSIS: Supreme Court Affirmative Action Case Could Undermine Corporate Racial Agenda

As Harvard and the University of North Carolina (UNC) await a landmark Supreme Court decision, expected this week, on their racial admissions policies, companies are also watching nervously, fearing that the decision could expose their race-based hiring and training programs to civil rights lawsuits.

According to a Harvard Business Review 2022 survey, more than 60 percent of U.S. companies had a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) program, which categorizes employees according to race and gender. In addition, following the 2020 police murder of George Floyd, a black man, numerous companies including Wells Fargo, United Airlines, JPMorgan Chase, Delta Airlines, Ralph Lauren, Estee Lauder, and Google parent company Alphabet Inc. announced race-based hiring and promotion policies.

In addition to race considerations, Salesforce, a technology company, said it plans to have 40 percent of its employees be people who identify as women or nonbinary by the end of 2026. The problem for these corporations, experts say, is that these policies, while trendy, are likely illegal under U.S. laws, which explicitly prohibit discrimination by race and gender.

“It’s become very popular, especially in the last three or four years, to have these race-based initiatives, and they are only beginning to be tested against the Civil Rights Act or against the Constitution,” Erin Wilcox, an attorney at the Pacific Legal Foundation, told The Epoch Times. Wilcox is representing students who claim that admissions policies at Thomas Jefferson High School in Virginia are discriminatory, in a case being appealed to the Supreme Court.

“I think it was really caused by a certain boldness on the part of our public officials and corporate America in believing that these rules didn’t apply to them, or that what they were doing is more important,” she said. “I think we’re seeing a proliferation that’s going to be reined in, starting probably with the Harvard and UNC cases, and I think certainly others down the pike.”

Unholy Alliance: Google Joins Facebook in Blocking News Stories in Canada

Following a similar decision by Facebook (now known as Meta), Google announced plans to block all news links in Canada following the passage of Bill C-18, the Online News Act, a corporate welfare package for the legacy media industry that would force tech companies to pay big media companies for linking to their content.

The bill is the Canadian equivalent of the derided Journalism Competition and Preservation Act (JCPA) in the U.S., a bill which media lobbyists have gone to extraordinary lengths to pass, including a last-ditch effort to attach it to the annual defense spending bill last year.

VIDEO: Mexican President Tells Cartel Behave ‘Or I’m Telling Your Parents’

Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador sent a message to one of Mexico’s most violent drug cartels telling them to release 16 kidnapped police employees “or I’m telling your parents.”

The Mexican politician made the comment this week during his morning news conference where he had to acknowledge that a group of gunmen from Cartel Jalisco New Generation had stopped a bus full of Chiapas state police employees and kidnapped 16 of them. During his comments, Lopez Obrador said that it was best for the captors to release the kidnapped victims or else he would tell their parents. The comment sparked much outrage in Mexico since Lopez Obrador has previously made similar comments in an apparent attempt to minimize the severity of the security crisis in the country.

Winsome Sears: Justice KBJ ‘Was Chosen Because She’s Black and Because She’s a Woman’

Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears (R) said Thursday on Fox News Channel’s “The Story” that Associate Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson “was chosen because she’s black and because she’s a woman.”

Host Martha MacCallum said, “This is the dissent from Justice Jackson, she said, ‘With let them eat cake obliviousness today, the majority pulls the ripcord and announces color blindness for all by legal fiat. But deeming race irrelevant in law does not make it so in life,’ she said. She and Justin Sotomayor were outraged by this decision. Sotomayor said, ‘The opinion today will highlight the court’s own impetus in the face of America who cries for equality resound.’ What would you say to these justices?”

American Auto Workers Withhold Support from Biden for ‘Funding Race to Bottom’ with Electric Vehicles

The United Auto Workers (UAW), the largest auto industry union representing more than 400,000 working and middle class members, is withholding support for President Joe Biden over his administration’s “actively funding the race to the bottom” with a massive effort toward Electric Vehicles (EVs).

In an internal memo, UAW President Shawn Fain has said the union will not be endorsing Biden until major commitments are made to protect jobs and high wages for American auto workers — both of which have been threatened by the White House’s EV push.

A report from SafeHome.org indicates there were 17.4 million guns sold in the U.S. during 2022, and approximately 1.4 million have been sold each month in 2023.

SafeHome arrived at the figure of 17.4 million by examining FBI data on National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) background checks, and counting every “long gun and handgun check was counted as 1.1 sales,” while counting a multiple gun NICS check as two sales. (NICS checks conducted for concealed carry permits and other non-sale matters were not counted.)

UPS Teamsters Warn ‘Nationwide Strike Imminent’ if Friday Deadline Isn’t Met

The Teamsters Union warned that a U.S.-wide strike is imminent if the United Parcel Service (UPS) doesn’t come to an agreement with the union Friday, potentially triggering one of the largest strikes in American history.

The union, which represents hundreds of thousands of UPS drivers, “walked away from the national bargaining table” and said that UPS must give its “last, best, and final offer”  by Friday, June 30.

“The largest single-employer strike in American history now appears inevitable,” Teamsters General President Sean O’Brien said in a news release this week. “Executives at UPS, some of whom get tens of millions of dollars a year, do not care about the hundreds of thousands of American workers who make this company run,” O’Brien said.

Home Affordability Worsens Across U.S. During Second Quarter Of 2023 As Home Prices Tick Upwards

ATTOM, a leading curator of land, property, and real estate data, today released its second-quarter 2023 U.S. Home Affordability Report showing that median-priced single-family homes and condos are less affordable in the second quarter of 2023 compared to historical averages in 98 percent of counties around the nation with enough data to analyze, continuing a pattern dating back to early 2022.

The report shows that affordability has worsened across the nation this quarter amid a renewed jump in home prices that has pushed the typical portion of average wages nationwide required for major home-ownership expenses up to 33 percent.

Why AirBnB Owners Are About To Be Forced Property Sellers

Many Airbnb owners will soon be forced to sell their properties, resulting in a housing bust that could be on par with the 2008 Subprime Crisis in some cities.

These Airbnb owners are getting ready to sell because of “Airbnb bust”, a downturn in the short-term rental market that started in the second half of 2022, with Airbnb operators in some cities facing a 50% decline in revenue. These declining revenues are the result of a slowdown in post-pandemic travel demand to go along with a massive increase in Airbnb supply, trends which are now causing many Airbnb operators to lose money on their rental.

I believe these losses will cause a wave of distressed selling from Airbnb operators in 2023 and 2024, particularly in cities where:

1) revenue has crashed the most, and

2) Airbnb supply increased the most

If you’re a homebuyer or real estate investor it’s important to understand the exposure your city and neighborhood has to the Airbnb crash, particularly the timing and depth of the downturn. Because when it all shakes out, I believe that there will be some great buying opportunities for homebuyers and investors across the real estate spectrum.

“And that’s why they are deliberately targeting the environment and people’s livelihoods and homes and therefore also destroying lives…”.

Hotez Refuses to Debate RFK on Vaccines

June 15, 2023, podcast host Joe Rogan interviewed Robert F. Kennedy Jr. about his bid for president and his views on vaccines

Vaccine scientist Dr. Peter Hotez lashed out against Rogan and Kennedy on Twitter, accusing them of spreading misinformation

Rogan invited Hotez to debate Kennedy on his show in return for a $100,000 donation to his charity of choice. Later, other members of the public raised the pot to more than $1.5 million

Hotez went on MSNBC, stating he wasn’t willing to participate in an event that would get turned into “The Jerry Springer Show” by having Kennedy there. So, Hotez will only appear on shows that cannot challenge his claims

Hotez funded controversial and risky gain-of-function research on coronaviruses at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV), from which SARS-CoV-2 emerged

How to create a deadly pandemic in five easy steps

Commentary

  1. “Accidentally” release an ordinary virus (because your GoF abilities suck), that can only be detected using a special test, cranked up to the max – blame it on the Chinese and then deny it.
  2. Euthanise old folk and blame it on the virus.
  3. Deny regular early treatment with frontline antibacterials and corticosteroids for those you cannot euthanise.
  4. Introduce a “cure” in the form of a “vaccine”* which is deadly and blame it on the “unvaccinated”.
  5. Slowly, re-allow the use of antivirals – previously admonished as being only for animal use – in addition to the antibacterials and corticosteroids – and let the “vaccine” take the credit.

Grifting, Grants, and Academia

Throughout the pandemic, Peter Hotez has continually promoted contradictory messages about the vaccines. However, he has been consistent in promoting the rest of his research

Peter Hotez has received over 100 million dollars of research grants. Much of this has been for developing a human hookworm vaccine that has not amounted to anything despite decades of research

The current grant system we have incentives performing research that does not advance science and medicine. Because of this, there are many barriers to those seeking to advance those fields. Addressing those barriers is vital for the health of every person in America
