British police urge women to report men for staring

Government defines ‘sexual harassment’ by perception, with women more likely to report behavior as ‘offensive’

The British Transport Police (BTP) is urging women who take public transportation to report men for even “minor sexual harassment offenses.”

In a statement last Saturday the BTP cited a recent study which found that over a third of women have been sexually harassed on the commute to work, though only one in five people reported the offense. Those “offenses” include actions such as “unwanted comments” or “staring.”

The BTP is therefore urging women to “lower their tolerance” for sexual harassment and is asking people to report “unacceptable behaviour such as leering, catcalling, touching, pressing, upskirting or indecent exposure.”

BTP Detective Chief Superintendent Paul Furnell said police “will always believe” bystanders who report others for exhibiting such behavior.

“I would urge everyone to download the Railway Guardian app and let us know if you witness or experience this sort of offending. We will always believe you and take you seriously,” he said.

Furnell also made it clear that police are targeting men, and women are at no fault.

“I absolutely say women should not be changing their behaviours, not in any way,” Furnell said, according to the Daily Mail. “It is about tackling the behaviour of men and boys and the source of behaviour that is causing harassment, alarm and stress.”

“[F]or us, no incident is too small and if there is an element of harassment we want to know about it – it might be that the same guy has been targeting women again and again, we won’t know unless we have help building that intelligence,” he added.

“Looking” or “staring” is one of the most common sexual “offenses” in the UK, according to government data. In a 2020 study the Office of National Statistics (ONS) found that the “three most commonly experienced sexual harassment behaviours both within individuals’ lifetimes and within the last 12 months were: unwelcome sexual jokes, staring or looks, and sexual comments.”

According to the UK government, sexual harassment is defined as “unwanted verbal, non-verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature which has the purpose or effect of violating the recipient’s dignity, or of creating an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment for the recipient.” But the government has also noted that sexual harassment should not be constrained by legal definitions. Instead, it should be defined by whether the “victim” objectively considers it welcome or unwelcome.

DC Judge Denies Trump Request for Subpoenas of J6 Committee Materials

D.C. District Judge Tanya Chutkan has denied former President Donald Trump’s motion to subpoena records from the House of Representatives’ Jan. 6 committee, arguing that his requests are like a fishing expedition.

Her seven-page decision criticized the scope and alleged vagueness of President Trump’s requests. It also argued that he was improperly applying Federal Rule of Criminal Procedure 17 to information that could be obtained through other means.

“Defendant has not met his burdens with respect to his proposed Rule 17(c) subpoenas,” Judge Chutkan said.

NYPD calls for ‘elevated vigilance’ during Rockefeller Center tree lighting as pro-Palestinian group plans to ‘flood’ event

Police warned that “elevated vigilance” is necessary during this year’s Christmas tree lighting ceremony at Rockefeller Center, according to an internal NYPD memo obtained by The Post Tuesday — as pro-Palestinian protesters announced they plan to “flood” the iconic event in support of Gaza.

The memo notes that there are no “specific or credible” threats targeting the world-renowned annual event — which is expected to draw tens of thousands of revelers to Midtown on Wednesday.

But the threat evaluation notice pointed out that mass gatherings and high-profile events such as the ceremony — hosted this year by singer Kelly Clarkson — could be easy targets for “malicious actors” looking to do harm during the holiday season.

Since the bloody Oct. 7 attack launched by Hamas on Israel, “a variety of foreign terrorist organizations (FTOs) have persistently called for broad attacks on US interests,” the NYPD said in the memo.

‘Unprecedented’ Numbers of NYPD Police Flee Force as Crime Continues to Soar

2,516 officers have resigned from the department so far this year.

Record numbers of New York City Department (NYPD) police officers have handed in their badges, raising concerns that residents of the nation’s largest city could see already sky-high crime rates spiral further out of control.

A total of 2,516 officers have resigned from the department in 2023, according to police pension data obtained by The Epoch Times. It is the fourth largest number in the past decade and 43 percent more than the 1,750 who resigned their positions in 2018. Further, the data show that the number of cops quitting before they reach the 20 years required to receive their full pensions increased by 104 percent since 2020.

Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Hendry told The Epoch Times in a statement that the recent exodus comes on top of years of officer attrition, eroding the ability of the nation’s largest police force to protect and serve to dangerous levels.

Close Call at JFK Airport: ‘If We Hadn’t Bailed Out, We Would Have Collided’

Two planes experienced a close call at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York City this month in a situation that could have resulted in a collision if one plane had failed to bail out, as frustrations continue under Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg’s leadership.

The near miss occurred November 10, as American Airlines flight AA28, arriving from Los Angeles International Airport, approached JFK and was cleared for its approach to runway 22 left, according to a description of the incident. Another flight, a Tradewind Aviation Pilatus PC-12 hailing from White Plains Westchester County Airport, was cleared for approach to runway 22 right.

IRS Responds to Rumors of ‘Fourth Stimulus Check’ Coming in November

An IRS spokesperson has clarified that rumors spreading online that a fourth round of stimulus checks is going out to 10 states on Nov. 30 is false.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has addressed rumors that have emerged on social media claiming that a fourth round of stimulus checks will automatically go out to residents in 10 states on Nov. 30.

The rumor began after the IRS revealed on Nov. 17 that some Americans who were eligible to receive pandemic-era stimulus checks but didn’t apply for them could still get the money by filing amended tax returns for 2020 and 2021 and claiming the funds through the “recovery rebate credit.”

Following the IRS’ announcement on Nov. 17 that some people who missed out on earlier stimulus rounds or got checks but didn’t get all the money they were eligible for, a post on social media claimed that the IRS was going to send out a fourth round of stimulus checks.

Researchers Identify Bacteria as Cause of Itchy Skin

Researchers at Harvard Medical School have identified a bacterium as the possible cause of itchy skin diseases, such as eczema or dermatitis, and—most importantly—potential effective treatments to help stave off the pesky irritation.

In a study published in the Nov. 22 issue of the journal Cell, researchers reported that exposure to the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) triggered the nervous system in mice to send signals from the skin to the brain. Researchers also conducted the experiment in laboratories using human cells.

“We’ve identified an entirely novel mechanism behind itch—the bacterium Staph aureus, which is found on almost every patient with the chronic condition atopic dermatitis. We show that itch can be caused by the microbe itself,” said senior author Isaac Chiu, associate professor of immunobiology at Harvard, in a statement.

Meta designed platforms to get children addicted, court documents allege

Instagram and Facebook parent company also knowingly allowed underage users to hold accounts, unsealed legal complaint says

Instagram and Facebook parent company Meta purposefully engineered its platforms to addict children and knowingly allowed underage users to hold accounts, according to a newly unsealed legal complaint.

The complaint is a key part of a lawsuit filed against Meta by the attorneys general of 33 states in late October and was originally redacted. It alleges the social media company knew – but never disclosed – it had received millions of complaints about underage users on Instagram but only disabled a fraction of those accounts. The large number of underage users was an “open secret” at the company, the suit alleges, citing internal company documents.

In one example, the lawsuit cites an internal email thread in which employees discuss why a 12-year-old girl’s four accounts were not deleted following complaints from the girl’s mother stating her daughter was 12 years old and requesting the accounts to be taken down. The employees concluded that “the accounts were ignored” in part because representatives of Meta “couldn’t tell for sure the user was underage”.

Walmart’s Secret Scheme: A Threat to Your Financial Security

The following content is sponsored by the Electronic Payments Coalition.

Walmart hopes you are already focused on holiday prep and not paying attention to what’s happening on Capitol Hill.

For years, Walmart and other megaretailers have lobbied senators and congressmen for favors. Walmart alone employs approximately 1.6 million people in the United States, and in their last quarter had revenue of over $160 billion. You can see why they have an outsized ability to influence elected officials.

Their latest request is to overhaul how credit card payments are routed during purchases. They’d like the Federal Reserve to implement new rules that favor big-box stores, and Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) and others are happy to oblige. Sen. Durbin introduced the “Credit Card Competition Act” this summer and is pushing it amongst his colleagues. He has even got Republican Sen. Roger Marshall of Kansas to sign-on. The bill will give unprecedented power to the federal government to control consumers’ credit card transactions. Right now, retailers and financial institutions have negotiated agreements about how payments operate, but this will upend all of that and force companies like Visa and Mastercard to hand over their technology for free.

Across America, multiple police departments have issued serious alerts about a recent iPhone update that can be used by predators to target children.

Specifically, if you (or your child) has an iPhone — and you recently updated the iOS operating system to the latest version (which is iOS 17) — then you should know about a new feature called Name Drop.

Now, on the surface, this feature is really convenient. Instead of having to make a new contact, and manually punching in someone’s phone number — you can just share your information with them automatically.

However, here’s the catch: unbeknownst to most people, with the recent update, this new feature is (by default) turned on — leading police departments across the country to issue warnings for children.

To Disable NameDrop on iPhone:

  1. Open the “Settings” option
  2. Tap the “General” option
  3. Tap the “AirDrop” tab, which controls the file-sharing features of the phone
  4. Turn off the “Bringing Devices Together” option

Scientists Ponder Pond That Mysteriously Turned Bright Pink in Hawaii—Here’s Why It Did (Maybe)

A pond in Hawaii has turned so bubblegum-pink that it looks like a flamboyance of flamingos forgot their color, but the bizarre phenomenon is no cause to flock for a swim. High salinity may be to blame for the strange hue, scientists say, and they’re warning against entering the water or drinking it.

Staff at the Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge on Maui have been monitoring the pink water since Oct. 30.

“I just got a report from somebody that was walking on the beach, and they called me up like, ‘There’s something weird going on over here,’” said Bret Wolfe, the refuge manager.

Biden Opposes Plan to Stop Federal Lands from Becoming Migrant Camps

President Joe Biden’s White House is opposing a plan that would prevent federal lands from being transformed into migrant camps housing illegal aliens released into the United States from the southern border.

In August, Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) introduced H.R. 5283, named the “Protecting our Communities from Failure to Secure the Border Act,” to block the federal government from using federal lands to house illegal aliens.

This week, Biden issued a statement in opposition to Malliotakis’s legislation:

The administration strongly opposes H.R. 5283, which would prohibit the use of Federal funds to provide temporary shelter to certain noncitizens, including migrants seeking asylum, on Federal lands falling under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service, the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, or the Forest Service. [Emphasis added]

The administration opposes this legislation because it would significantly restrict the ability of the Department of the Interior and the Department of Agriculture to make decisions regarding the appropriate uses of their lands and resources, even in emergency or other situations. [Emphasis added]

Malliotakis’s legislation, which was approved by the House Natural Resources Committee in October, came as New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) and New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) got approval from the Biden administration to move hundreds, and potentially thousands, of border crossers and illegal aliens onto Floyd Bennett Field.

The historic, federally-owned airfield was used by the U.S. Coast Guard and Navy during World War II. Before then, the airfield was also used as New York City’s first municipal airport and has had famous guests visit it in prior decades, including Howard Hughes and Howdy Doody.

Today, Floyd Bennett Field serves as one of the largest open spaces in the city, which has made it ideal for biking, fishing, camping, and hiking for New Yorkers. The airfield is managed by the National Park Service and is surrounded by residential communities.

Higher Incidence of COVID-19 Found Among Consistent Mask-Wearers: Study

Some mask wearers were found to have up to 40 percent higher incidence of infection, contradicting earlier studies and opposing the narrative of mask mandates.

People who wore protective masks were found to be more likely to contract COVID-19 infections than those who didn’t, according to a recent Norwegian study.

The peer-reviewed study, published in the journal Epidemiology and Infection on Nov. 13, analyzed mask use among 3,209 individuals from Norway. Researchers followed them for 17 days, and then asked the participants about their use of masks. The team found that there was a higher incidence of testing positive for COVID-19 among people who used masks more frequently.

Among individuals who “never or almost never” wore masks, 8.6 percent tested positive. That rose to 15 percent among participants who “sometimes” used masks, and to 15.1 percent among those who “almost always or always” wore them.

Meet an Elementary School Teacher Who Uses Guns to Help Kids

A few years back, it was all the rage among journalists to describe their niche—what used to be known as their “beat”—as being at an intersection. The first time I heard this was from a writer for Forbes who described his job this way to me: “I reside at the intersection between art and culture.”

I was mystified for a moment, as I was trying to picture an actual intersection, but I soon replied, “I suppose, then, I have an office at the intersection of government and individual freedom.”

“Too many head-on collisions there for me,” he quipped.

Thankfully, the aggrandizing use of “intersections” as metaphor—as if we need journalists to direct cultural traffic for us—is no longer as common among those with bylines. But I think of this now because there are cultural enclaves in this constitutional republic—some of which are rife with people letting themselves be kept in a state of ideological servitude to mainstream media narratives—in which many people don’t have practical experience to draw upon to understand their Second Amendment rights.

Given this, when you meet someone like John Annoni, an elementary school teacher from Allentown, Pa., and the founder of Camp Compass Academy, and see how natural it is for such a person to cross large cultural divides … well, you want to ask them a lot of questions; after all, in this case, John actually does reside at the intersection between America’s vast law-abiding gun culture and the illegal gun culture of inner-city gangs.

For decades, John has used the law-abiding gun culture so many of us know and enjoy to help inner-city youth; in fact, a number of students who graduated from his program literally told me that John’s introduction to America’s gun culture actually saved their lives.

This deal not only involves direct phone contacts of criminal suspects but extends to their social networks as well, snooping on individuals who have not been suspected of any criminal activity at all.
