Do you suffer from Triskaidekaphobia?

Friday the 13th

Long considered a harbinger of bad luck, Friday the 13th has inspired a late 19th-century secret society, an early 20th-century novel, a horror film franchise and not one but two unwieldy terms—paraskavedekatriaphobia and friggatriskaidekaphobia—that describe fear of this supposedly unlucky day.

Scoop: Israel tells UN to evacuate the northern Gaza Strip within 24 hours

The Israeli Ministry of Defense and the IDF notified the UN just before midnight local time that Palestinians living north of Wadi Gaza should evacuate to the southern part of the Gaza Strip in the next 24 hours, according to UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric and another source with direct knowledge.

State Media: Syria’s Two Main Airports Disabled by Simultaneous Israeli Missile Strikes

Syria’s two main airports were taken out of service Thursday by simultaneous Israeli missile strikes, Syrian state media said, in the first such attack since Hamas terrorists launched their assault on Israel.

AFP reports Israeli missile strikes have caused the grounding of flights at the airports in the capital Damascus and northern city Aleppo, both of which are controlled by the government of war-torn Syria.

The “simultaneous” strikes “damaged runways in the two airports, putting them out of service”, state media said, citing an unidentified military source via Reuters.

Senior Hamas Leader Says Attack on Israel Was Secretly Planned for Years

A senior leader for the Hamas terrorist group has claimed that the bloody attack on Israel that killed more than 1,200 people was secretly strategized for two years, adding that only a handful of leaders knew the “zero hour” of the invasion.

Ali Barakeh, a member of Hamas’s exiled leadership, told Russia Today in an interview translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute that Hamas deliberately refused to join the Palestinian Islamic Jihad in its fight against Israel for the last few years because it wanted to make Israelis believe it was busy “governing” the Gaza Strip.

“In the past couple of years, Hamas has adopted a ‘rational’ approach. It did not go into any war, and did not join the Islamic Jihad in its recent battle,” Mr. Barakeh said. “We made [Israel] think that Hamas was busy with governing Gaza and that it wanted to focus on the 2.5 million Palestinians [in Gaza], and has abandoned the resistance altogether.”

“All the while, under the table, Hamas was preparing for this big attack,” he said, further pointing out that the “zero hour” of Hamas’s destructive bombardment and ground assault on Israel was kept “completely secret.”

“A limited number of Hamas leaders knew it,” he added. “The number of people who knew about the attack and its timing could be counted on one hand. In order to keep the attack secret and successful, the different factions and our allies did not know the zero hour.”

Mr. Barakeh also disclosed that one of the reasons American citizens are being held hostage in Gaza is because there are Palestinian prisoners sentenced to life in the United States.

Unveiling China’s Shadow Over the Israel-Hamas Conflict\

News Analysis – The tragic events in Israel and Gaza started by the Iranian-backed Hamas has unleashed a wave of terror reverberating around the globe. Given the historical support of Russia and Iran to groups and states targeting Israel, unanswered questions about outside involvement or links exist. Due to Chinese support for Iran and Russia, we should examine Chinese firms’ links to key groups here.

Chinese military and security firms have a long history of working with Iran. Chinese telecom firms Huawei and ZTE built major portions of Iran’s internet and mobile telecom network as well as an internet monitoring and security apparatus for authorities.

A 2012 RAND paper noted the close working relationship between Iran and China, with everything from advanced weaponry, chemical and nuclear weapons assistance, trans-shipment to avoid U.S. sanctions, and even Chinese designs finding their way into Iranian weaponry.

Three Jewish schools in London close over security fears

Three north London Jewish schools have closed for the day, some citing planned protests in support of Palestinians.

Parents at one school were told to keep their children inside because “of the risk of violence on the streets”.

Menorah High School in Brent, Torah Vodaas Primary School and Ateres Beis Yaakov, both in Barnet, sent letters to parents announcing the closures.

The Community Security Trust, a charity providing security advice for British Jews, said schools should remain open.

Mysterious Sidewinder Air Defense Systems Headed For Ukraine (Updated)

The U.S. military says it will soon deliver “new” air defense systems to Ukraine that fire AIM-9M Sidewinder heat-seeking missiles. What these systems are remains a mystery, but The War Zone has previously discussed the possibility of a surface-to-air Sidewinder capability for the Ukrainian forces. This followed the unexplained inclusion of AIM-9Ms, an older air-to-air version of the Sidewinder, in previous U.S. military aid packages earlier this year.

A new tranche of U.S. military aid for Ukraine “includes AIM-9 munitions for a new air-defense system that we will soon deliver to Ukraine,” U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said earlier today at the sixteenth meeting of the multinational Ukraine Contact Group in Brussels, Belgium.

Wait!  We already have “boots on the ground” in Israel (Kirby is a LIAR!) … What do you call Delta Force and Seal Team Six?

White House Not Planning to Deploy US Troops to Israel

White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby on Oct. 12 ruled out the possibility of U.S. troops becoming involved in the ongoing fighting between the Israel Defense Forces and Palestinian terrorists, saying that the Israeli side doesn’t want its U.S. allies to wade into the conflict.

“There is no intention, no plan, and frankly, no desire by the Israelis for U.S. combat troops to be involved in this conflict,” Mr. Kirby said during a White House news conference on Oct. 12 in response to a question from NTD, The Epoch Times’ sister media outlet.

Palestinian terrorists, led by Hamas, began firing rockets from the Gaza Strip on Oct. 7. Palestinian gunmen simultaneously breached the Gaza–Israel barrier in multiple locations to carry out a ground attack, killing more than 1,000 people and wounding hundreds more. Hamas forces appear to have taken hundreds more people hostage.

Biden’s DHS Admits Terror Suspects Increasingly Trying to Cross Border

President Joe Biden’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) admits illegal aliens on the government’s “Terrorism Watch List” are increasingly trying to enter American communities through the United States-Mexico border.

Officials with DHS’s Office of Intelligence and Analysis issued its “Homeland Threat Assessment” report late last month, as noted by The Federalist’s Shawn Fleetwood, which details the threat of terrorism, illegal drugs, and so-called “disinformation,” among other issues, to Americans.

Hamas Massacre Sparks Pro-Palestine, Anti-Israel Demonstrations on U.S. College Campuses: ‘Israel, Go to Hell!’

The Iranian-backed Palestinian terror group Hamas’ massacre of Jews in Israel last weekend appears to have galvanized students across the United States into putting on pro-Palestine, anti-Israel demonstrations on their college campuses. One student at Ohio State University even referred to the slaughtering of Jews by Hamas as “a resistance movement.”

At UCLA, students were heard chanting, “Intifada,” an Arabic word that translates to “shaking off” and in the Palestinian context, is understood to mean a civil uprising.

Anti-Israel Protest at University of Washington: ‘One Solution, Intifada Revolution’

An anti-Israel protest erupted at the University of Washington on Thursday wherein students were seen waving Palestinian flags and chanting for an “intifada.”

Video of the protest began circulating on social media showing students with Palestinian flags and chanting, “There is only one solution. Intifada Revolution.”

U.S. NEWS, POLITICS & GOVERNMENT

The Power Hour has received back channel information, unverified at this point, that U.S. government and military officials are keeping a close eye on protests and public demonstrations taking place in America over the next 24-72 hours. There has been no indication that there will be any military intervention in case things become violent. The States will be tasked with dealing with any issues. However, the information we’re getting indicate that violence and civil unrest “may be imminent” according to the unverified memo, which we have a copy of. Surveillance in the major cities will probably be intensified. Unverified information can likely be classified as a PSYOP; nonetheless, just be aware of your surroundings, especially if you live near a “soft target”.

Scalise Drops Out of Race for House Speaker

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) announced Thursday evening he’s dropping out as a candidate for speaker of the House, just a day after winning the Republican nomination.

“It’s been quite a journey, and there’s still a long way to go. I just shared with my colleagues that I’m withdrawing my name as a candidate for speaker-designee,” Mr. Scalise told reporters on Capitol Hill.

“Our conference still has to come together, and it’s not there,” he added. “There are still some people that have their own agendas. And I was very clear we have to have everybody put their agendas on the side and focus on what this country needs.”

Election Watcher Files Federal Case Accusing Minnesota of Sharing Private Voter Information

A lawsuit has been filed against the Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon, alleging the state’s practice of cleaning its voter’s roll by sharing citizens’ private information with a third party violates federal law, and although this case is limited to Minnesota, other states are doing the same thing.

Anyone who obtains a state driver’s license or identification card knows the state collects a lot of personal information in the licensing process.

The 1994 federal Drivers Privacy Protection Act (DPPA) restricts the disclosure and use of personal information found in state motor vehicle databases.

GOP Lawmaker Flies to Israel to Rescue Americans After ‘Ton of Requests’

Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.), a U.S. Army combat veteran, has gone to Israel to aid with the evacuation of stranded American citizens after Hamas terrorists launched attacks on its territory.

A picture shared by former Rep. Mayra Flores on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, shows the Iraq veteran with a group of Americans he helped escape Israel by bus.

“My friend … is currently on the ground in Israel, helping to evacuate American citizens who are trapped,” Ms. Flores wrote. “May God keep them safe as they continue their rescue efforts!”

State Department Issues Warning to Americans to ‘Reconsider Travel’

The U.S. Department of State increased its travel advisory to “Level 3,” which urges American citizens to “reconsider travel” to Israel after Hamas attacks that started over the past weekend.

In a bulletin Wednesday, the agency said the upgraded advisory applies to Israel and the West Bank region. A travel advisory for Gaza still remains at Level 4, or “Do Not Travel.”

The alert cited terrorism and civil unrest as reasons not to travel to Israel or the West Bank, while it cited terrorism, civil unrest, and armed conflict for Gaza

Bank Valuations Differed From Trump Organization Statements: Witness

Former Deutsche Bank risk management officer Nicholas Haigh took the witness stand on Wednesday, testifying on the Statements of Financial Condition (SFC) at the center of a civil fraud case against former President Donald Trump.

Last September, New York Attorney General Letitia James sued the former president for defrauding the state by artificially inflating his net worth in order to obtain more favorable terms from banks and insurers.

She argued that he inflated his net worth by anywhere between $812 million and $2.2 billion each year on his SFCs between 2011 and 2021, and New York Supreme Court Judge Arthur Engoron ruled in a pretrial summary judgment on Sept. 26 that President Trump was liable for fraud and had inflated his net worth.

Fed Minutes Show One More Rate Hike, Then Higher Interest Rates for ‘Some Time’

Newly released records of discussions among Federal Reserve policymakers show that they expect one more interest rate hike and then they’ll hold rates high for “some time,” although a recent surge in long-term Treasury yields may have changed that calculus.

Minutes from the central bank’s most recent September meeting of the rate-setting Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), released on Oct. 11, show that a “majority” of officials believe that one more rate hike “would likely be appropriate” to get inflation closer to the Fed’s 2 percent target.

At that meeting, FOMC members opted to keep rates unchanged within a range of 5.25 to 5.5 percent—the highest level in 22 years.

Animal Contraceptive and Antibiotics Detected in Top 10 Popular Fast Foods: Report

Two types of animal antibiotics and an animal contraceptive have been detected in food samples from America’s top 10 most popular fast-food chains, according to a laboratory report.

In September, Moms Across America (MAA) submitted food samples from 10 popular American food chains to the Health Research Institute, an Iowa-based nonprofit laboratory that tests food for nutritional value, biofunctionality, and contaminants and toxins, requesting that the laboratory test the samples for over 100 common veterinary drugs and hormones. MAA is a nonprofit activism group formed by mothers intending to bring awareness to food that contains genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and pesticides.

Molecular and chief scientist at the Health Research Institute, John Fagan, confirmed that his lab tested the food samples.

5 Types of Tea That May Help With Weight Loss

Certain brews may help you lose weight, thanks to plant compounds called catechins that can rev metabolism. More research is needed, but here are the teas that experts say hold the most potential.

If you’re a tea drinker, you probably already know your cup is salubrious. “Tea has medicinal properties, and it is the second-most-consumed beverage in the world,” says Vicki Shanta Retelny, RDN, the Chicago-based host of the podcast Nourishing Notes.

Observational research has found that drinking two or three cups per day is associated with a lower risk of early death, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and stroke, according to a review published in June 2019 in Molecular Nutrition & Food Research. On the other hand, the evidence for tea’s effects on weight loss hasn’t always been clear.

How Drinking Tea May Help With Weight Loss

If your beverages are typically high-calorie, swapping in tea may lead to weight loss. For example, trading a sugar-laden mocha for a zero-calorie tea at the coffee shop can easily save you a few hundred calories, notes Sarah Koszyk, RDN, the San Francisco–based author of 365 Snacks for Every Day of the Year.

Research suggests that tea may also play a direct role in weight loss. “Teas contain catechins, which can increase metabolism by stimulating the body to break fats down more quickly and burn more calories,” Koszyk says.

Catechins are a type of plant compound with powerful antioxidant properties, according to past research. Tea is especially rich in four catechins: epicatechin (EC), epigallocatechin (EGC), epicatechin gallate (ECG), and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Of these four, EGCG is the most abundant, and it is thought to contribute most to the many health benefits of tea, according to a past review.

There are many varieties of tea, and several of the traditional types — green, black, white, and oolong — are harvested from the dried leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant, according to the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Their unique flavors and properties are thanks to differences in processing, geographical location, and plant varieties. These differences also affect the nutritional composition of each tea, which means certain types may be better suited for weight loss than others.

Top 5 Teas for Weight Loss

  • Green Tea

The EGCG and caffeine in green tea may target fat cells in particular. Another small study involving 10 men who were obese or overweight found that taking 300 mg of EGCG in supplement form for three days helped increase fat oxidation (the process of breaking down fatty acids). Per past research, 300 mg of EGCG is about what you’d find in three cups of brewed green tea.

“In addition, EGCG can inhibit fat cell development, so the body doesn’t form new fat cells,” Koszyk says. Research in animals suggests that the catechins in green tea interfere with the process of fat absorption and metabolism, according to a past article.

  • Black Tea

Prolonged oxidation, which is commonly referred to as “fermentation,” also changes the makeup of polyphenols, or plant compounds, in black tea. While it does contain EGCG like less-processed tea varieties, it’s a better source of theaflavins. These polyphenols form when black tea leaves are oxidized, and they may offer weight loss benefits, according to a review published in April 2018 in Molecules.

For example, a past study found that men and women who drank three cups of powdered black tea per day gained less weight and slimmed their waistlines after three months, compared with those who didn’t drink black tea. But these changes had not continued at a six-month follow-up point, so these effects of black tea appear to be limited.

  1. Oolong Tea

Oolong contains a mixture of polyphenols that give green and black tea their claim to fame: catechins (green tea) and theaflavins (black tea), according to a past review. Like these other tea varieties, oolong also provides caffeine and may promote weight loss.

  • White Tea

The minimal processing also means white tea holds onto a high amount of anti-inflammatory antioxidants and fat-burning EGCG, making it another potentially beneficial brew for trimming weight.

“White tea has been suggested to help speed up the breakdown of fat cells and block the formation of new ones, so it can potentially offer weight loss benefits,” Koszyk says.

  • Hibiscus Tea

This tart, tangy tea — harvested from hibiscus leaves — offers catechins like EGCG and has been shown to help lower blood pressure and cholesterol, Retelny says. One past review of animal and human studies, for instance, suggests that hibiscus extract shows promise in the treatment of high blood pressure and high cholesterol, though the authors say we need more research before recommendations can be made.

New Blood Test 91 Percent Accurate for Detecting Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

A novel blood test designed for speedier diagnosis of a debilitating illness that affects tens of millions of people worldwide shows potential for accurately detecting myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), according to a recent study published in Advanced Science.

The single-cell Raman spectroscopy method successfully determined disease presence and severity in close to 100 study participants with 91 percent accuracy.

The test was also 84 percent effective in distinguishing among mild, moderate, and severe disease.

Basketball arena tried to use AI for its ‘Star-Spangled Banner’ captions. It didn’t go well.

“Stars pass through the payroll. Bus fire or the right.”

As people worry about whether artificial intelligence (AI) will replace people’s jobs, it appears at least one job is safe—the person who puts the closed captioning text on the jumbotron at sports events.

A video shared on X (formerly Twitter) shows what happened at a Portland Trail Blazers basketball game when some kind of automated closed captioning tool misheard the lyrics of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” You know, our country’s national anthem that pretty much every American knows by heart? And the captions it came up with were hilariously entertaining.

A guy named Brian (@brianonhere) shared the video with the text, “bro im crying lmao. of all the songs to use AI captions on.” As the jumbotron captions came on the screen while the national anthem was being sung, this is what people in the crowd saw:

During, “O’er the ramparts we watched,” the captions relayed the previous words in the song (“…broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight”) as, “STARS. PASS THROUGH THE PAYROLL. BUS FIRE.”

Then it continued, changing “O’er the ramparts we watched…” to: “OR THE RIGHT. HART TWEET WOW! TOUCHED WERE SO GALLANTLY STREAMING ME. IT’S RIGHT. THE BOMBS. FIRST EVENING. GAVE PROOF. THROUGH THE NIGHT. RIGHT THAT OUR FLAG WAS STILL THERE.”

You might think it was getting better, but oh no, we’re not done yet. Literally.

“OH SAY. AIN’T DONE. GUYS HAD STARTED. SUSPECT ANGLE. MADHU.” (That’s not even a word!) “LAY-UP AND, UH, THE FRIEND.”

Unfortunately, we don’t know how the caption interpreted the final line, “and the home of the brave,” but we probably don’t want to know.

NDP Releases Digital ID Governance Framework

A robust digital public infrastructure (DPI) has become increasingly crucial for governments, especially when it comes to delivering large-scale, effective public services. For the public sector, the debate isn’t about whether to adopt digital technologies but which ones to embrace and how to ensure their seamless and effective integration. This is particularly true when it comes to digital legal ID, a foundational digital public infrastructure that has the potential to catalyze digital transformation and development opportunities across countries.

Supreme Court Rejects GOP States’ Challenge to Biden’s Rule Estimating Social Cost of Carbon

The U.S. Supreme Court has declined to hear a lawsuit from Republican-led states challenging the Biden administration’s attempt to assign a social cost to carbon—a foundational element to all life.

Last year, the Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit affirmed a federal district court’s decision to dismiss the lawsuit. The eighth circuit ruled that the states lacked standing to challenge the estimates and indicated they could sue if it identified a concrete injury.

COVID-19 Vaccines ‘May Trigger’ Rheumatic Inflammatory Diseases: Study

A new review suggests that COVID vaccines “may trigger” rheumatic immune-mediated inflammatory diseases, including arthritis, vasculitis, lupus, and adult-onset Still’s disease.

On average, patients developed rheumatic diseases 11 days after vaccine administration, according to the study. Seventy-five (over 27 percent) of these patients experienced total disease remission, and about 50 percent improved following treatment. Eight were admitted to intensive care, and two died from their symptoms.

“The short time span between COVID-19 vaccine administration and the onset of R-IMIDs suggests the potential possibility of a cause-and-effect relationship,” the authors wrote.
