Watch: Disillusioned Venezuelan Migrant Wants to Go Home

Outside San Antonio’s non-government welcome center for migrants, Breitbart Texas interviewed Luis Gomez, a Venezuelan migrant who says he just wants to go home. Hundreds of migrants moved along the Alamo City’s  San Pedro Avenue on a brisk Saturday morning, hoping to leave the city for other parts of the United States. In a sign that resources available to the migrants may be dwindling, Gomez has now become disillusioned with the American dream.

Gomez, like other migrants Breitbart Texas spoke with, is being told he must leave the shelter soon or face eviction. Venezuelan migrants who cannot fund their transportation away from the city and have no relatives or sponsors in the United States willing to fund their travel expenses could be seen walking aimlessly on the streets surrounding the shelter. Some were observed loitering in parking lots, hoping to perform day laborer services to assist in funding their departure.

Mourners in heavily Palestinian Chicago suburb remember Muslim boy killed as kind and energetic

Crowds of mourners in a heavily Palestinian Chicago suburb paid respects Monday to a 6-year-old Muslim boy killed in an alleged hate crime, hours after authorities revealed new details about the evidence used to charge the family’s landlord with stabbing the child and his mother.

Wadea Al-Fayoume, who had recently had a birthday, died Saturday after being stabbed dozens of times in a brutal attack that drew condemnation from local elected officials to the White House. Authorities said the family’s landlord, Joseph Czuba, was upset over the Israel-Hamas war and attacked them after the boy’s mother proposed they “pray for peace.”

In Bridgeview, which is home to a large and established Palestinian community, family and friends remembered Wadea as a kind and energetic boy who loved playing games. His body was carried in a small white casket — which was at times draped with a Palestinian flag — through packed crowds.

Gagging Trump?  Seriously?

Judge Prohibits Trump From Speaking Out Against Prosecutors, Others

Judge Tanya Chutkan, presiding over the case against former President Donald Trump for allegedly interfering in the 2020 presidential election, has ordered certain restrictions on what President Trump can say in relation to his case after hearing arguments on Oct. 16.

Judge Chutkan said she wouldn’t impose restrictions on statements he makes about Washington, or criticism of the government, including the Biden administration and the Department of Justice (DOJ). However, President Trump will be prohibited from posting statements attacking special counsel Jack Smith, his staff, Judge Chutkan’s staff and other court personnel, and the families of any of these people.

He is also limited in part about what he can say about potential witnesses; for example, he may make posts about former Vice President Mike Pence, but not in regard to underlying events connected to his case.

Trump Vows to Appeal Gag Order in Election Case

On Monday, a federal judge prohibited former President Donald Trump from speaking about his prosecutors in the case alleging he illegally interfered when he challenged the 2020 elections.

The order came as the former president, who is campaigning to run for president again in 2024, arrived to give a speech in Iowa.

“They’ve weaponized the Justice Department,” he said in Adel, Iowa. “This is like a banana republic. But it’s going to be OK. The good news is—I’m the only one that’s ever been indicted where the [poll] numbers went through the roof—because the people understand it.” The crowd burst into cheers as President Trump said he had challenged the 2020 elections because “the election was crooked.”

Postcards from a Police State: 22 Years of Blowback from the USA Patriot Act

Commentary by John Whitehead  – For those who remember the days and months that followed 9/11, there is an unnerving feeling of déjà vu about the Hamas attacks on Israel.

The same shocking images of carnage and grief dominating the news. The same disbelief that anyone could be so hateful, so monstrous, so evil as to do this to another human being. The same outpourings of support and unity from around the world. The same shared fear that this could easily have happened to us or our loved ones.

Now once again the drums of war are sounding on the world stage, not that they ever really stopped. Israel is preparing to invade Gaza, the Palestinians are nearing a humanitarian crisis, and the rest of the world is bracing for whatever blowback comes next.

Here in the United States, as we approach the 22nd anniversary of the USA Patriot Act on October 26, we’re still grappling with the blowback that arises from allowing one’s freedoms to be eviscerated in exchange for the phantom promise of security.

Here are a few lessons that we never learned or learned too late.

TECH Microsoft-owned LinkedIn lays off nearly 700 employees — read the memo here

Microsoft-owned LinkedIn announced Monday that it cut almost 700 employees, with most coming from the engineering organization, according to a memo viewed by CNBC. Cuts also came in the company’s finance and human resources groups, according to a person familiar with the situation who asked to remain unidentified because they were not authorized to discuss the changes.

The reductions come as the business-oriented social network has seen year-over-year revenue growth slow for eight consecutive quarters. It grew just 5% in the second quarter, even as membership growth has accelerated each quarter for the past two years, Microsoft said in July.

“As we continue to execute on our FY24 plan, we need to also evolve how we work and what we prioritize so we can deliver on the key initiatives we’ve identified that will have an outsized impact in achieving our business goals,” LinkedIn executives Mohak Shroff and Tomer Cohen wrote in the memo. “This means adapting our organizational structures to improve agility and accountability, establishing unambiguous ownership and driving improved efficiency and transparency through reduced layering.”

Shower Risks: Microbes, Water Quality, and Safety Tips

You may think you’re alone in your shower, but research shows it’s a popular gathering spot for microbes.

Eight minutes a day. That’s the average duration of our daily cleansing ritual—a time to rejuvenate, cleanse, and breathe moisturized air. But have you ever paused to wonder if these precious minutes may expose you to unwanted bacteria and microbes?

The Unseen World of Your Shower Head

Shower heads are a potential environment for microbial activity. The conditions of dampness, warmth, and darkness—along with trace nutrients and organisms—encourage microbes to form resilient biofilms that may withstand standard sterilization methods and resist antimicrobial treatments.

A study by the University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder) examined 45 shower heads across nine U.S. cities, employing cutting-edge molecular techniques to identify resident bacteria. The researchers concluded that “Showerheads may present a significant potential exposure to aerosolized microbes.”

Researchers discovered a specific bacteria called Mycobacterium avium, a non-tuberculous mycobacterium (NTM). Its concentration in some shower heads was 100 times that of the regular water supply. While it appeared in 20 percent of the tested samples, the detected rate was 78 percent with more advanced testing methods.

Light exposure affects mental health in REMARKABLE ways, study reveals

Most people know that exposure to artificial light late at night or even during a nighttime trip to the bathroom disrupts sleep.  However, exposure to natural light during the morning and afternoon after sound sleep greatly benefits human health.  This statement directly contrasts with the mainstream media’s obsession with avoiding the sun at all costs to allegedly prevent skin cancer.

As detailed in a recent study published in Nature Mental Health, exposure to sunlight is especially beneficial to mental health.  In particular, exposure to light in the daytime is essential for mental health.

Study illuminates how light exposure can transform mental health

Though few know it, a disturbance in circadian rhythm is the most common characteristic of psychiatric disorders.  Light is the main dictator of the circadian clock, where exposure to daytime light bolsters rhythms, while exposure to nighttime light disrupts circadian rhythms.

Scientists with Melbourne, Australia’s Monash School of Psychological Sciences, and the Turner Institute for Brain and Mental Health wanted to know if regular exposure to light might be an environmental risk factor for psychiatric disorder susceptibility.

The study centered on 86,772 adults with an average age of 62.4 years.  Scientists analyzed exposure to light in the day and night to determine if it was associated with a higher risk for the development of psychiatric disorders.

The study revealed that heightened exposure to light during the night was linked to a higher chance of:

  • Major depressive disorder
  • PTSD
  • Psychosis
  • Anxiety disorder
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Self-harm

Alternatively, heightened exposure to natural light during the day decreased the risk for psychosis, self-harm, PTSD, and depressive disorder.

Beaming with benefits: How sunlight can supercharge your health

If you haven’t been taking a stroll around the block for at least 20 minutes daily without exception, now is the time to start, especially on sunny days.  Expose your face, arms, and legs to the sun during a walk, jog, or run, and you’ll do your body a litany of favors.

Let your skin soak up the sun daily, and you’ll receive an infusion of vitamin D, essential for human health.  Regular sunlight exposure also improves the immune system by generating vitamin D.  Vitamin D has immunomodulatory effects that enhance immune system functionality, ultimately helping ward off illness and infection.

As highlighted above, consistent exposure to sunlight helps regulate circadian rhythm for optimal sleep and functionality during waking hours.  Sunlight exposure also enhances mood through the production of serotonin, a hormone released within the brain that makes one feel happy and less stressed.

So, seize the opportunity to embrace the sun and unlock its many health benefits, ultimately enhancing your mental health and overall quality of life.

Elon Musk’s X fined $380K over “serious” child safety concerns, watchdog says

Google got a warning, but X could face millions in fines for compliance failure.

Today, X (formerly known as Twitter) became the first platform fined under Australia’s Online Safety Act. The fine comes after X failed to respond to more than a dozen key questions from Australia eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant, who sought clarity on how effectively X detects and mitigates harms of child exploitation and grooming on the platform.

In a press release, Inman Grant said that X was given 28 days to appeal the decision or pay the approximately $380,000 fine. While the fine seems small, the reputational ding could further hurt X’s chances of persuading advertisers to increase spending on the platform, Reuters suggested. And any failure to comply or respond could trigger even more fines—with X potentially on the hook for as much as $493,402 daily for alleged non-compliance dating back to March 2023, The Guardian reported. That could quickly add up to tens of millions if X misses the Australian regulator’s deadline.

A.I. Agents: ChatGPT Can Write Its Own Code And Execute It

The widely used chatbot ChatGPT was designed to generate digital text, everything from poetry to term papers to computer programs. But when a team of artificial intelligence researchers at the computer chip company Nvidia got their hands on the chatbot’s underlying technology, they realized it could do a lot more.

Within weeks, they taught it to play Minecraft, one of the world’s most popular video games. Inside Minecraft’s digital universe, it learned to swim, gather plants, hunt pigs, mine gold and build houses.

“It can go into the Minecraft world and explore by itself and collect materials by itself and get better and better at all kinds of skills,” said a Nvidia senior research scientist, Linxi Fan, who is known as Jim.

The project was an early sign that the world’s leading artificial intelligence researchers are transforming chatbots into a new kind of autonomous system called an A.I. agent. These agents can do more than chat. They can use software apps, websites and other online tools, including spreadsheets, online calendars, travel sites and more.

In time, many researchers say, the A.I. agents could become far more sophisticated, and could replace office workers, automating almost any white-collar job.

“This is a huge commercial opportunity, potentially trillions of dollars,” said Jeff Clune, a computer science professor at the University of British Columbia who previously worked on this kind of technology as a researcher at OpenAI, the San Francisco start-up that built ChatGPT. “This has a huge upside — and huge consequences — for society.”

Nvidia’s agent plays a game. Similar agents can schedule meetings, edit files, analyze data and build multicolored bar charts. The idea is that these automated systems will eventually act as personal assistants able to handle a wide range of tasks across the internet.

Today’s agents are limited, and they can’t exactly organize your life. ChatGPT can search the travel site Expedia for flights to New York, but you still have to book the reservation on your own.

This technology, as researchers improve it, could make office workers and consumers more efficient. It could also change the nature of video games, providing a new wave of bots that gamers can play alongside and chat with.

AI chatbots could help plan bioweapon attacks, report finds

The artificial intelligence models underpinning chatbots could help plan an attack with a biological weapon, according to research by a US thinktank.

A report by the Rand Corporation released on Monday tested several large language models (LLMs) and found they could supply guidance that “could assist in the planning and execution of a biological attack”. However, the preliminary findings also showed that the LLMs did not generate explicit biological instructions for creating weapons.

The report said previous attempts to weaponise biological agents, such as an attempt by the Japanese Aum Shinrikyo cult to use botulinum toxin in the 1990s, had failed because of a lack of understanding of the bacterium. AI could “swiftly bridge such knowledge gaps”, the report said. The report did not specify which LLMs researchers tested.

Bioweapons are among the serious AI-related threats that will be discussed at next month’s global AI safety summit in the UK. In July Dario Amodei, the CEO of the AI firm Anthropic, warned that AI systems could help create bioweapons in two to three years’ time.

LLMs are trained on vast amounts of data taken from the internet and are a core technology behind chatbots such as ChatGPT. Although Rand did not reveal which LLMs it tested, researchers said they had accessed the models through an application programming interface, or API.

In one test scenario devised by Rand, the anonymised LLM identified potential biological agents – including those that cause smallpox, anthrax and plague – and discussed their relative chances of causing mass death. The LLM also assessed the possibility of obtaining plague-infested rodents or fleas and transporting live specimens. It then went on to mention that the scale of projected deaths depended on factors such as the size of the affected population and the proportion of cases of pneumonic plague, which is deadlier than bubonic plague.

The Rand researchers admitted that extracting this information from an LLM required “jailbreaking” – the term for using text prompts that override a chatbot’s safety restrictions.

GARDENING, FARMING & HOMESTEADING

How To Make Use of Your Unused Land

City dwellers tend to have extremely limited spaces around their properties. Individuals living in inner cities rarely have any outdoor space to make use of. In fact, they don’t even tend to have their own building. Landowners make the most of the space they have to build upwards in the form of apartments and blocks of flats. Individuals living in the suburbs may have some outdoor space. But the majority will still live in semi-detached properties or properties that form a row of terraced housing. When you live in the country, you tend to have a whole lot more room. Most abodes will have sprawling yards. Some will have extended land that comes as part and parcel of the home that they buy or rent. So, if you have extra outdoor space, you should be grateful and make the most of it. Don’t just let your unused land go to waste! Here are a few things that you can do to really make the most of unused land surrounding your property!

So if you have a family of four and are stockpiling for a month (thirty days) for example, you’d need at least one half gallon of drinking, and one half gallon of personal hygiene water, every day for as long as you plan on surviving. That’s 120 of water in total.

Supreme Court Again Reinstates Biden Admin’s ‘Ghost Guns’ Regulation

Hours before its stay was to expire, the Court extended its block of a Texas judge’s finding that the rule was illegal.

The Supreme Court has again reinstated on an emergency basis the Biden administration’s rule regulating so-called ghost guns that can be assembled at home.

The ruling is not the final word on the issue. The case continues in the lower courts. It could also return to the Supreme Court in the future.

“Ghost gun” is a pejorative term used by gun control advocates to describe a homemade firearm that lacks a serial number and therefore can’t be tracked by law enforcement. Although some states regulate homemade guns, gun control groups have been trying for years to ban or regulate homemade guns at the federal level but have failed to convince the U.S. Congress to act.
