Chinese Warplane Comes Within Feet to Colliding With US Bomber Over South China Sea

Footage released by the U.S. military shows the Chinese J-11 fighter flying within 10 feet of the U.S. Air Force B-52 bomber over the South China Sea.

A Chinese fighter jet came within 10 feet of a U.S. bomber in a nighttime intercept over the South China Sea on Oct. 24, putting both aircraft “in danger of collision,” the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) said.

INDOPACOM said the pilot of a Shenyang J-11 “flew in an unsafe and unprofessional manner” and “demonstrated poor airmanship by closing with uncontrolled excessive speed” near the U.S. Air Force B-52 bomber.

“We are concerned this pilot was unaware of how close he came to causing a collision,” the U.S. military said in a statement.

China Deploys Aircraft Carrier Strike Group off Taiwan’s East Coast

China deployed an aircraft carrier strike group off Taiwan’s east coast, military officials in Taipei and Tokyo confirmed Thursday.

The People’s Liberation Army Navy Shandong Carrier Strike Group (CSG) deployment began Wednesday, the same day Taiwan’s president met with U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in California.

The carrier strike group is now operating off Taiwan’s east coast after transiting the Bashi channel on Wednesday in its first training voyage in the Western Pacific.

CNS Shandong (17), its embarked air wing and its escorts passed through the southeast waters of Taiwan to start its first training voyage in the Western Pacific,  Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense said Wednesday. The release added that both sea and air units along with ground-based radars detected and monitored the group’s movement.

Czech Defense Minister Calls for Withdrawal From UN: Gaza Resolution ‘Cheers on Terrorists’

Only 14 countries voted against the resolution, which didn’t mention Hamas’s atrocities in Israel.

The Czech Republic’s top defense official is calling for her country to leave the United Nations after its central policy-making body approved a resolution demanding a ceasefire in Gaza but failing to mention killings and kidnappings of civilians committed in Israel by Hamas.

The Czech Republic was one of 14 U.N. members that voted against the Arab states-drafted resolution, which overwhelmingly passed the General Assembly on Friday with 120 supporting votes and 45 abstentions. A Canadian amendment, which would have unequivocally condemned Hamas’ atrocities and demanded an unconditional release of all hostages held by the terrorist group, was defeated in an 88-55 vote with 23 abstentions.

Only two other European Union members, Austria and Hungary, opposed the resolution alongside the United States, Israel, Paraguay, and a group of Pacific Island states.

A sign of things to come?

Gaza residents break into U.N. warehouse for supplies as Israeli barrage continues

Thousands of Gaza residents broke into warehouses and distribution centers of the United Nations Palestinian refugee agency, grabbing flour and “basic survival items,” the organization said on Sunday.

“This is a worrying sign that civil order is starting to break down after three weeks of war and a tight siege on Gaza,” the organization said in a statement.

Israeli raids on the Gaza Strip were intense overnight. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it had struck more than 450 terror targets during the past day, and that Israeli forces continue to expand ground activities. It added that an IDF officer was severely injured by a mortar shell in the northern Gaza Strip.

Israeli Army Says Ground Forces ‘Expanding’ Activities in Gaza After Strikes Disrupt Internet Service

Frequent explosions from airstrikes lit up the sky over Gaza City after nightfall Friday, when the black-out in internet, cellular and landline services hit. The Red Crescent said it lost all contact with its operations room and medical teams. It said it feared people would no longer be able to contact ambulance services. Other aid groups said they were unable to reach staff on the ground.

The Palestine Telecommunications Company, Paltel, announced “a complete disruption of all communication and internet services” due to bombardment.

Israeli military spokesman, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, said ground forces were “expanding their activity” in Gaza and that it “is acting with great force … to achieve the objectives of the war.”

100,000 join London march against strikes on Gaza

Tens of thousands marched through central London yesterday to demand a ceasefire in Gaza with many also expressing fury at the UK government’s refusal to back one.

As Israel ratcheted up its offensive in the coastal strip 2,200 miles away, around 100,000 people attended the latest demonstration – matching last Saturday’s record turnout for a pro-Palestinian march in the UK. One difference seemed to be a palpably more tense mood than previous marches, reflecting events unfolding in Gaza and widespread exasperation over the government’s approach to the three-week-old conflict.

Before the protest, James Cleverly, the foreign secretary, prompted dismay by saying calls for a ceasefire “aren’t going to help the situation”.

Government’s failure to back ceasefire resolution adds to tensions among demonstrators

Elon Musk: Starlink Will Provide Internet Connectivity to ‘Aid Organizations’ in Gaza

Elon Musk has said that Starlink will provide connectivity to “internationally recognized aid organizations” in the territory of Gaza, where communications have been cut amidst the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Israel is intensifying its military campaign against Gaza, which began in response to an attack by Hamas militants into Israeli territory earlier this month, claiming the lives of over 1,300 civilians and leading to the capture of hundreds more.

Exclusive: 1800 Migrants Cross into Texas Border Town in 24 Hours

After a brief slowdown in migrant crossings into the small border town of Eagle Pass, Texas, nearly 1,800 migrants were apprehended between Thursday evening and Friday afternoon, according to a source within CBP. Border Patrol agents assigned to the two stations located in the city responded to multiple large migrant groups crossing into the heart of downtown Eagle Pass and points farther south of the city.

The largest single group of migrants was more than 300 strong and crossed two miles south of the Eagle Pass Camino Real Port of Entry. Breitbart posted near the city’s rail bridge from Mexico and observed multiple smaller groups cross the Rio Grande. The migrants went on to breach the concertina wire near the Camino Real Port of Entry. Nearly 200 migrants accumulated under the bridge and surrendered to the Border Patrol.

After a huge spike in crossings in late September that saw groups as large as 2,400 migrants crossing into the city, resulting in significant national media attention, efforts in Mexico to slow the migrants’ travel to the city brought single-day apprehensions to around 1,000 migrants per day.

These Are The Cities With The Most Bubble Risk In Their Property Markets

Buoyed by low interest rates for the last decade, many property markets have seen substantial price growth since 2010. Experts warned that real estate bubbles—in which the price of assets moved up far beyond their intrinsic value—were forming.

The UBS Global Real Estate Bubble Index analyzes the real estate market of 25 major cities across the globe and assigns them a score between -0.5 to 2.0 to convey bubble risk. The higher the score, the more imbalanced the market is, with those above 1.5 in “bubble-risk” territory.

In the chart below, Visual Capitalist’s Pallavi Rao visualizes the data in the above map, along with charting the real property price changes in the last year.

Judge Orders Ivanka Trump to Testify in Father’s Trial

On Friday, New York Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron decided that Ivanka Trump will be required to testify in the trial against her father and other Trump Organization executives, including her brothers Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr.

Ivanka Trump had originally been a co-defendant in the case until an appeals court decision this summer set a statute of limitations on the case. Having left the company in 2016, Ivanka Trump was then dismissed from the case.

She remained on the witness list, however, and on Friday Justice Engoron said her dismissal shouldn’t mean she is exempt from having to testify.

Trump Reasserts Presidential Immunity in Federal Election Case

Former President Donald Trump’s legal team responded to prosecutors’ arguments that the defense of presidential immunity would put President Trump above the law, stating that following this precedent would merely “return us to the sensible process envisioned by the founders, where the People’s representatives in Congress—not an unelected prosecutor—first decide whether a President’s official actions are worthy of sanction and potential criminal liability.”

The former president had filed a motion to dismiss the case on Oct. 5, claiming the absolute immunity conferred to a U.S. president as outlined in the ruling of Nixon. v. Fitzgerald. Prosecutors argued that such an argument put President Trump above the law, as no one, even the president of the United States, should escape prosecution for serious crimes. The indictment against President Trump alleges crimes that depend on the state of mind, that he sought to defraud through “dishonesty, fraud, and deceit” in the aftermath of the 2020 elections, while President Trump maintains that he sought to investigate allegations of fraud in the 2020 elections.

In the new response, attorneys argued that the prosecutors misunderstand the scope and purpose of presidential immunity.

Two Democrats Retiring From Congress After Speaker Drama

Two Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives are departing Congress after the drama-filled month that saw the House remove Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) as speaker and later elect his replacement.

Rep. John Sarbanes (D-Md.), 61, will leave Congress in 2025 after serving for nearly two decades, he announced on Oct. 26.

Mr. Sarbanes worked with nonprofits before entering the House in 2007 and said he has found himself “drawn back to that kind of work—wanting to explore the many opportunities to serve that exist outside of elected office.”

“With that in mind, I have decided not to seek re-election in 2024. While I am making this announcement today—specifically for the benefit of candidates interested in running for my seat in next year’s election—I’m not going anywhere for the next fourteen months. That’s what’s left in my term and I’m committed to finishing strong,” he added.

The longtime member said the decision to leave was not easy but that he feels hopeful about America’s future because the new Democrat leadership “is making all the right moves to bring Democrats back into the majority in January 2025.”

Rep. Jeff Jackson (D-N.C.), 41, who just assumed office in January after nine years in the state Senate, also said he is not running for reelection in 2024.

Mike Pence Suspends Presidential Bid: ‘This Is Not My Time’

Former Vice President Mike Pence announced on Oct. 28 that he has ended his bid for the White House.

He came to the conclusion after traveling across the country over the past six months, Mr. Pence said at the Republican Jewish Coalition’s Annual Leadership Summit in Las Vegas.

“Last June, I announced my intention to seek the Republican nomination for president of the United States because I believe this country is in a lot of trouble,” he said on the stage. “[After] traveling across the country over the past six months … it’s become clear to me: This is not my time.

“So after much prayer and deliberation, I have decided to suspend my campaign for president, effective today. I’m leaving this campaign, but let me promise you I will never leave the fight for conservative values, and I will never stop fighting to elect principled Republican leaders to every office in the land.”

Mr. Pence’s announcement came after disappointing poll results, and it makes him the first major candidate to leave a race that has been dominated by his running mate-turned-rival, former President Donald Trump.

Decade-Long Homeless Encampment Under Freeway Overpass Cleared in Los Angeles

Residents had witnessed drug distribution, fights, arson, graffiti, and large piles of trash at the site.

Situated underneath a 405 Freeway overpass, one of Los Angeles’s most dangerous homeless encampments—located near Venice Boulevard and Globe Avenue and straddling Culver City and the City of Los Angeles—was cleared Oct. 24 by officials from both cities.

Biden Challenger Getting Cold Shoulder From Some Democrats

Minnesota Congressman Dean Phillips announced his candidacy for U.S. President on Friday.

It has been only one day since Minnesota Congressman Dean Phillips announced he was taking on President Joe Biden for the Democratic nomination and he is already getting a pretty cold shoulder from his party.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens were among those who quickly took to social media shortly after Mr. Phillips’s announcement. The mayor denounced the Minnesota representative’s candidacy, accusing the 54-year old three-term lawmaker of “hosting an attention-seeking stunt” that he specifically said is insulting to black voters and characterized in a lengthy tweet on X as undermining the successes of the Biden-Harris administration.

“I’m not sure what he’s doing in New Hampshire today, but I know what he’s not doing: he’s not mounting a serious or meaningful bid to be President of the United States,” the mayor wrote, pointing out that Mr. Phillips is just a duplicate of President Biden, having voted in favor of his policies “100 percent of the time.”

At the same time, Mr. Phillips’s own party quickly and very publicly tied him to accepting past donations from conservative-leaning U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’s generous billionaire friend Harlan Crow.

Mr. Crow, a Republican mega donor, was only in the news just days before Mr. Phillips announced his bid for the presidency for forgiving a $267,000 loan he made to Justice Thomas for the purchase of a luxury motorhome. It had previously been reported that Mr. Crow had paid the private school tuition for Justice Clarence’s grand nephew, lavished the Justice with expensive vacation trips and funded real estate deals for him.

He has already been called a “fraud” in hundreds of social media posts for his ties to Mr. Crow.

In addition, the X account “Biden’s wins,” the largest online group of President Biden’s supporters, has launched a campaign specifically aimed at Mr. Phillips. The group is calling for users to post a blue heart to send the message, “Dean Phillips you are still voting for President Biden.”

IRS Halted Surprise Visits After Pressure From GOP’s ‘Weaponization’ Panel: Report

The GOP-led “weaponization” subcommittee in Congress said in a new report that the IRS decided to end its policy of “abusive” surprise visits to taxpayers’ homes due to pressure from the panel.

“The Committee’s and Select Subcommittee’s oversight revealed, and led to the swift end of, the IRS’s weaponization of unannounced field visits to harass, intimidate, and target taxpayers,” states the report, which was released by the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government on Oct. 27.

“Taxpayers can now rest assured the IRS will not come knocking without providing prior notice—something that should have been the IRS’s practice all along,” it adds.

UAW and Stellantis reach tentative contract deal as union adds strike at Tennessee GM factory

Jeep maker Stellantis reached a tentative contract agreement with the United Auto Workers union on Saturday as it escalated strikes against General Motors by adding a plant in Tennessee.

The Stellantis deal, which still must be ratified by members, leaves only GM without an agreement with the union. But the union walked out Saturday night at a GM factory in Spring Hill, Tennessee, in an effort to increase pressure on the company to reach a deal.

The Stellantis deal mirrors one reached earlier this week with Ford. The union says the contract also saves jobs at a factory in Belvidere, Illinois, that Stellantis had planned to close.

GM said it was disappointed with the additional strike at the Spring Hill assembly and propulsion systems plant “in light of the progress we have made.” The company said in a statement that is has bargained in good faith with the union and wants to reach a deal as soon as possible.

Spring Hill is GM’s largest manufacturing facility in North America with 11 million square feet of building space and almost 4,000 employees. It makes the electric Cadillac Lyriq as well as the GMC Acadia and Cadillac XT5 and XT6 crossover SUVs.

UAW President Shawn Fain confirmed the Stellantis agreement in a video appearance Saturday evening and said that 43,000 members at the company still have to vote on the deal.

About 14,000 UAW workers who were on strike at two Stellantis assembly plants in Michigan and Ohio, and several parts distribution centers across the country, were told to drop their picket signs and return to work. So the agreement will end a six-week strike at the maker of Jeep and Ram vehicles.

The pact includes 25% in general wage increases over the next 4 1/2 years for top assembly plant workers, with 11% coming once the deal is ratified. Workers also will get cost-of-living pay that would bring the raises to a compounded 33%, with top assembly plant workers making more than $42 per hour. At Stellantis, top-scale workers now make around $31 per hour.

Like the Ford contract, the Stellantis deal would run through April 30, 2028.

Under the deal, the union said it saved jobs in Belvidere as well at an engine plant in Trenton, Michigan, and a machining factory in Toledo, Ohio.

“We’ve done the impossible. We have moved mountains. We have reopened an assembly plant that was closed,” Fain said.

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon Slams Central Banks for ‘Dead Wrong’ Forecasts

He also said that we are in the ‘most dangerous time’ in decades amid economic challenges.

CEO of JPMorgan Chase, Jamie Dimon, criticized central banks like the Federal Reserves for being “dead wrong” in their financial forecasts.

Mr. Dimon made his comments while speaking at the Oct. 24 Future Investment Initiative summit, as he warned of multiple challenges facing the global economy.

“Prepare for possibilities and probabilities, not calling one course of action since I’ve never seen anyone call it,” he told the audience during the summit in Saudi Arabia.

Taylor Swift has made Kansas City her new stomping ground — and local shops say business is booming.

Last weekend, the Kansas City vintage shop Westside Storey had its best weekend of sales “in a long time,” manager Megan Folmsbee said.

The reason? Taylor Swift. Ever since the pop phenom first showed up to cheer on her rumored beau, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, at Arrowhead stadium on September 24th, the Midwestern city has been feeling bejeweled.

The shop has sold out of a T-shirt emblazoned with “Who’s Travis Kelce Anyway? Ew” — a play on the “22” lyric — and a “Red Zone Taylor’s Version” T-shirt and sweatshirt featuring images of Swift and Kelce. The downtown store has been flooded with in-person shoppers, and online orders for Swift-themed products are way up.

Westside Storey is one of several Kansas City businesses Insider spoke with that have seen a Swiftmania bump in sales. The crowds at Westside Storey are especially big on game days, when sales have spiked between 30 and 40%. Meanwhile, ticket sales for Chiefs games have soared.

CDC and Doctors Say Fewer Pregnant Women Getting Vaccines

Officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as some doctors, say that fewer pregnant women are getting influenza and other vaccines this year.

A recent CDC report found that among 2,000 women who were pregnant during last year’s cold and influenza season, as the survey was carried out in March and April, about a quarter of them were “very hesitant” about getting a flu vaccine. A year before that, some 17.2 percent were very hesitant to receive the shot.

The CDC study also found that 47.2 percent of expectant mothers received influenza vaccines last year, which is down from 57.5 percent who got them during the 2019-2020 season—before the COVID-19 pandemic and mass vaccination campaigns.

“Findings from this survey indicate that approximately one-half of pregnant women have not received influenza or Tdap vaccines, and only one-quarter received both vaccines,” the CDC paper said, referring to the vaccine for tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis.

It added: “Influenza vaccination coverage remains low and is [at least] 10 percentage points lower than during the 2019–20 season, consistent with other data sources that have shown decreases in influenza vaccination coverage among pregnant women since the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Breakthrough Study ‘Infects’ Animals With Alzheimer’s Through Microbiome

Fecal transplants from symptomatic patients into sterile rats induces cognitive deficits and neurodegeneration—early signs of Alzheimer’s.

Researchers recently discovered that they could give young, healthy animals Alzheimer’s disease by transferring the gut microbiome of human subjects with Alzheimer’s into germ-free rats.

Published on Oct. 18 in Brain, the findings solidify that the microbiome—the collection of bacteria, viruses, and fungi that live mostly in the colon—has a role in the development of Alzheimer’s, the most common form of dementia, affecting 6.7 million Americans.

“This study represents an important step forward in our understanding of the disease, confirming that the makeup of our gut microbiota has a causal role in the development of the disease,” King’s College London neuroscience professor Sandrine Thuret, one of the study’s senior authors, said in a statement.

Our intestines are home to trillions of these microscopic bugs, which mostly live in symbiosis with the human body. Many factors, including antibiotics, glyphosate, medications, and stress, have been proven to kill beneficial microorganisms and cause an imbalance often referred to as dysbiosis.

Exactly what causes the microbial shift in people with Alzheimer’s disease is unclear.

“Bigger picture, it is likely that no one factor, food or lifestyle change will, on its own, reduce the risk of developing cognitive decline as we age,” Percy Griffin, Alzheimer’s Association director of scientific engagement, said in a statement to The Epoch Times.

“Although this work is intriguing, it is still very preliminary. Larger studies in animal models, and then in humans, are required to make generalizations on what can be done in this area to reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s.”

The Crucial Role of Vitamin D in Physical and Mental Health

Vitamin D impacts both your innate and adaptive immune response, but how does it influence your mood and overall well-being?

For decades, the conventional medical establishment and media have downplayed if not entirely ignored evidence showing that sun exposure is a crucial part of a healthy lifestyle that prevents, as opposed to creates, diseases — including cancer.

Is that about to change? It’s too early to tell, but surprisingly supportive scientific papers and mainstream media articles have recently highlighted the benefits of sun exposure and vitamin D optimization.

The High Cost of Going Green: Hertz Blames Profit Miss on Dismal Tesla Resale Value, Sky High Repair Costs

Rental car giant Hertz hit a huge speed bump with its profitability, and its blaming the ill-advised choice to go green with Elon Musk’s electric cars. The company is blaming its recent quarterly profits miss on Tesla’s price cuts and unexpectedly high EV repair costs, which both caused big problems due to Hertz’s decision to build a large fleet of Tesla vehicles.

Bloomberg reports that Hertz, the popular car rental company, has encountered significant challenges that have caused it to miss its quarterly profit estimates. The company has been caught in the crosswinds of Tesla’s aggressive price-cutting strategies and the soaring repair costs associated with electric vehicles (EVs). Tesla has lowered its prices to boost sales, which has decreased the resale value of Hertz’s EV fleet by about one-third, according to Hertz CEO Stephen Scherr.

Using Llamas as Guardians: Benefits and Considerations

Llamas are increasingly gaining recognition as effective guardians for smaller livestock, such as sheep and goats. With their natural instinct to protect and socialize with other animals, they are becoming popular for farmers who need a low-maintenance guardian for their herds and flocks. Their presence can deter predators like coyotes and stray dogs.

As a member of the camelid family, llamas are known for their hardiness, adaptability, and resilience. They can live in a variety of environments and are comfortable with extreme weather conditions, making them suitable for farms in diverse locations.

Llamas are also relatively easy to care for, requiring minimal purchased food compared to other livestock guardian animals. Their diet is similar to sheep and goats, as they will eat grass, weeds, and leaves.

Supreme Court Ruling Means NYC’s Restrictions on Gun Licensing Are Unconstitutional: Federal Judge

The U.S. Supreme Court ruling striking down New York state’s restrictive gun permitting scheme means the New York City rules that enable officials to deny people firearm licenses over their moral character violate the U.S. Constitution, a federal judge has ruled.

New York officials “have failed to show that the broad discretion afforded to licensing officials” under city code “is consistent with the history and tradition of firearm regulation in this country,” U.S. District Judge John Cronan said in his ruling.

City law lets officials reject applications for gun permits if they determine a person is not “of good moral character” or for any other “good cause.”

FDA Should Recall ‘Adulterated’ Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine: Robert Malone

Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine is adulterated due to the undisclosed presence of a DNA sequence, experts say.

That should prompt a recall by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), according to Dr. Robert Malone, a vaccine expert whose work has been cited by Pfizer.

“It absolutely should be recalled,” Dr. Malone told The Epoch Times.

“Will the FDA do its job?” he added later.

Pfizer’s vaccine contains a Simian Virus 40 (SV40) DNA sequence, authorities in Canada confirmed to The Epoch Times. Authorities found the sequence after outside researchers, including Kevin McKernan, discovered the sequence in the shot.

“These Kids Have Sh*t For Brains”: Billionaire Leon Cooperman Slams Columbia Protesters, Halts Donations

Hedge fund Billionaire and Columbia alum Leon Cooperman says he’s pulling donations from his alma matter over its support of pro-Palestinian activists.

In an interview with Fox Business, host Liz Claman said to Copperman:

“You are a proud graduate of Columbia Business School, class of 67, son of Polish Jewish immigrants, first in your family to graduate from college,” asking “what do you make of what’s happening at Columbia and Harvard, Stanford, NYU as well?

There was a student walkout at Columbia just a couple hours ago, driven by Columbia professor Joseph Massad, who called the Hamas attack ‘awesome.’ Where are we in the world when 1,300 Israeli civilians…”

Cooperman interrupted her, exclaiming:

“I think these kids at the colleges have shit for brains.”

“We have one reliable ally in the Middle East,” Cooperman continued. “That’s Israel.”

“We only have one democracy in the Middle East. That’s Israel, ok?”

“And we have one economy tolerant of different people – gays, lesbians, etc. And that’s Israel. So, I have no idea what these young kids are doing.”

Cooperman then said he’d pull donations.

“Now, the real shame is I’ve given to Columbia, probably about $50 million over many years,” he continued.

“And I’m going to suspend my giving. I’ll give my giving to other organizations.”

Do Dogs Understand Our Words?

What do words mean to dogs? Do you sound like Charlie Brown’s teacher—just a series of ‘wah wah wahs’—or does your dog genuinely understand your words? Are dogs on the same page as us, or even in the same book? This article will explore dogs and their understanding of human language.

How much do people think dogs understand? A lot. According to a study by Péter Pongrácz and his colleagues at the Family Dog Project in Budapest. Thirty-seven owners provided a list of 430 different utterances that they thought their dogs knew, with each owner providing an average of 30 phrases.

Some dogs like Chaser (the dog who knows 1,000+ words) are celebrated for their panache for human language. The news media hails them as “super smart,” and after meeting Chaser, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson exclaimed, “Who would have thought that animals are capable of this much display of intellect?” So, what are these dogs doing with words?
