The Power Hour

Knowledge is Power

Today’s News: June 20, 2023

Today’s Top 5:
  1. Unlabeled GMO Salad Greens Coming To Grocery Stores

Pairwise, an agricultural biotechnology company, created Conscious Greens Purple Power Baby Greens Blend, the first CRISPR-edited food available to U.S. consumers.

The company used CRISPR, or clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat, to edit mustard greens’ DNA, removing a gene that gives them their pungent flavor.

The greens are first being rolled out in restaurants in St. Louis, Springfield, Massachusetts, and the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, before heading to U.S. grocery stores — beginning in the Pacific Northwest.

In 2022, researchers with Boston Children’s Hospital revealed that using CRISPR in human cell lines increased the risk of large rearrangements of DNA, which could increase cancer risk.

Because regulators don’t consider gene-edited foods to be genetically modified organisms (GMOs), they don’t have to be labeled.

  2. Around 100 Letters Containing Suspicious White Powder Sent to Kansas Republicans

Around 100 letters containing a suspicious white powder were sent to Republican members of the Kansas Legislature and the state’s Republican attorney general over the weekend, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) announced.

The KBI announced on Friday that 30 letters containing a suspicious powder were reported across the state, but that number skyrocketed to 100 by Sunday.

  1. Donald Trump’s Documents Trial Could Be Delayed Until After 2024 Election: ‘I Don’t See How It Gets to Trial Before’ November

Legal experts say a trial in the case of former President Donald Trump’s handling of allegedly classified documents may not happen until after the 2024 presidential election — which could work in the former president’s favor.

“I don’t see how it gets to trial before the November election,” legal expert and former Assistant Attorney General Andrew McCarthy said on a National Review podcast on Friday.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg was sued by a conservative organization in a bid to turn over prosecution records relating to the cases against former President Donald Trump, who was arrested on multiple counts earlier this year.

The Heritage Foundation think tank filed two Freedom of Information Law lawsuits against the Manhattan prosecutor, alleging that he and his office coordinated with Rep. Daniel Goldman (D-N.Y.), the White House, and the Department of Justice (DOJ) about the prosecution targeting Trump.

“Regrettably, these questions have not been met with answers. These reports have raised concerns in many circles based in large part upon the longstanding history of President Trump’s political opponents coordinating their activities to systematically weaponize the criminal justice system against him and thereby pervert the course of Justice,” the first lawsuit (pdf) against Bragg stated.

WORLD NEWS

Russia-Ukraine war live: attacks reported across Ukraine; Putin nuclear weapons threat is ‘real’, says Biden

Russia launched attacks across Ukraine overnight, including on the capital Kyiv and the western city of Lviv, close to the border with Poland.

Kyiv’s military administration said Moscow had launched a drone attack in the early hours of Tuesday, warning residents to find shelter, in a post on the Telegram messaging app. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

The administration later said the city’s air defences had detected and destroyed about two-dozen Iranian-made Shahed drones in the “massive air attack”. It was the second drone attack on the city since the beginning of the month, it said.

In Lviv, a piece of “critical infrastructure” was hit and set on fire, the city’s military administration said, but there were no injuries. Earlier, the city’s mayor, Andriy Sadovy reported explosions in Lviv and the surrounding area. It was not clear if the explosions came from air defences or from missile strikes.

Killing Cows in the Name of Preventing Climate Change

The Irish government recently proposed reducing Irish cow herds by 10% over the next three years to meet the European Union’s climate change targets, which includes a 25% reduction in emissions from farming by 2030

Properly raised and grazed livestock have a tremendously beneficial impact on ecological health and local microclimate

When land is left barren, it changes the microclimate on that swath of land. Two-thirds of the landmass on earth are already desertifying, which is why macroclimate is also impacted

While climate activists claim they’re promoting a “green” agenda, everything they propose suggests otherwise. Instead of transitioning factory farming into a regenerative model, which we know works wonders, they’re willfully ignoring the laws of nature upon which organic and sustainable environmentalism are based

The war on climate change, as currently fought, is ultimately a war on humanity itself

Antony Blinken Fails to Restart U.S.-China Military-to-Military Communications During Trip to Beijing

Secretary of State Antony Blinken acknowledged Monday he failed to get China to agree to restart U.S.-China military-to-military communications during his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the administration’s long sought-after trip to Beijing.

“I think it’s absolutely vital that we have these kind of communications, military to military,” Blinken said at a press conference, noting recent interactions between the U.S. and Chinese military, such as a Chinese fighter jet buzzing a U.S. military plane in late May over the South China Sea.

China Sends Premier to Germany, Seeking Tighter Stranglehold on Europe’s Economy

Chinese Premier Li Qiang began a five-day trip to Germany and France on Sunday, arriving in Berlin just as U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken was visiting Beijing.

The optics of Li working to peel away vital U.S. allies as American influence fades under the Biden administration were unmistakable.

Supermarket theft rising in Russia

Shoplifting has increased by up to 20% over the past year, according to market estimates

Retail theft in Russia has increased by nearly a third over the past year, which has put pressure on large supermarket chains, the news outlet Shoppers reports, citing market players.

Store theft rose by about 18-20% in 2022, and the same growth rate is expected this year, according to security experts.

Roughly 130 thefts per store were recorded between February and April of this year, representing an 18% increase compared to the same period a year earlier, the outlet said, citing a company developing face identification systems.

About 1.5-2% of revenue lost due to theft is considered acceptable in food retail, while in the non-food segment this figure stands at 1%, market experts say.

Nearly 300 Absentee Ballots From 2020 Election Found in Michigan Storage Unit

About 300 absentee ballots from the 2020 election were discovered in a Michigan storage shed, according to a local news report.

The ballots were discovered in a storage unit in Genesee County—a Michigan county made up of the town of Flint and Thetford Township—through the efforts of Thetford Township Supervisor Rachel Stanke.

Stanke told The Epoch Times that she became aware of the possible existence of the ballots in 2021, at which point she said she contacted the state’s attorney general and secretary of state.

Stanke was advised of the ballots’ existence by an employee at the township clerk’s office, who had discovered them in November 2021 while cleaning out a storage unit for the clerk. Upon discovering the documents, the unnamed employee reported them to the clerk but was unsure if anything was ever reported about the discovery. At that point, she went to Stanke to see about following up on the discovery.

IN-DEPTH: Will the 2024 Election Be Secure? Presidential Candidates Weigh In

Ballot harvesting. Stuffing ballot boxes. Tampering with voting equipment. Stealing ballots. Censoring candidates. These were some of the concerns raised, notably by former President Donald Trump, in the aftermath of the 2020 election.

As we approach 2024, how great a concern is election security for the 2024 presidential candidates? The Epoch Times submitted questions to major candidates in both parties to find out.

The questions centered on three concerns: Did election tampering affect the outcome of the 2020 presidential election? What should be done to ensure a fair election in 2024? Will you accept the outcome of the 2024 contest?

Christie Says Transgender Procedures on Minors Should Be Allowed If Parents Consent

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a declared candidate for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, says he thinks transgender procedures on minors, including hormone blockers, should be allowed as long as a parent consents.

While governor of New Jersey, Christie signed into law a measure that allows self-identifying transgender minors to use the bathroom that accords with their professed gender identity. That proposal advanced amid national debate over whether transgender people should use opposite-sex bathrooms, particularly biological males using female bathrooms.

Now, a number of states have passed laws restricting access to transgender procedures for minors as the country has seen a sharp uptick in the number of youths who question their gender identity.

GOP Senator Issues Warning to Fox News Over Matt Walsh’s Allegations About Network

Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) warned Fox News that it could risk alienating its viewer base following allegations by Daily Wire writer Matt Walsh that the company is internally promoting “pride” month and other left-wing initiatives.

“This kind of deliberate alienation of its own audience might not end well for Fox News. But for the fact that there is no other large cable news company in America that is widely known as conservative (or even right of center), this account could prove devastating,” Lee wrote, responding to a Twitter thread issued by Walsh, where Walsh claimed he obtained “internal [documents]” from current Fox News employees about the network’s LGBT-related initiatives.

Feds Bust Illegal Alien Smuggling Ring in New Mexico, Arizona, California

Federal prosecutors have arrested and indicted a number of foreign nationals associated with the “Lopez Crime Family” transnational criminal organization whom they allege had been operating an illegal alien smuggling business across New Mexico, Arizona, and California.

Last week, prosecutors announced that ten foreign nationals had been indicted by a federal grand jury, and six others were arrested as part of a two-year investigation into the Lopez Crime Family.

Prosecutors Offer to Drop Some Charges Against Disgraced FTX Boss and Democrat Super Donor Sam Bankman-Fried

Sam Bankman-Fried, the disgraced founder of crypto exchange FTX and a Democrat super donor, is set to stand trial in October on multiple criminal charges, including allegations of financial fraud involving billions of dollars. Despite the looming trial, prosecutors are now offering to drop some charges against SBF.

ABC News reports that federal prosecutors in New York are preparing for Sam Bankman-Fried’s October trial. The crypto mogul popularly known as SBF, who established the cryptocurrency exchange FTX, is charged with stealing billions of dollars in investor and client funds. His case has drawn attention from around the world because of the size of the alleged financial fraud as well as the diplomatic tensions it has caused between the Bahamas and the United States.

Biden Doesn’t Know What Year It Is, Has to Be Led Around by the Hand

Joe Biden was again at his beach house in Delaware for more vacation over the weekend.

He then left there on Monday and flew to Santa Clara County, California, to deliver remarks about climate change and the environment. He’s later scheduled to go to a campaign reception. At his climate remarks were Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-CA) and California Gov. Gavin Newsom (who some think may be pushing something of a shadow campaign to take over if Biden can’t continue his campaign).

Congress Tells Treasury Secretary to “Prepare for China to DUMP U.S. Treasuries”

In an absolutely stunning exchange on Capitol Hill, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, appearing before a Congressional Committee, was told by Congress to Prepare for China to DUMP $859 Billion in U.S. Treasury Debt Notes — “overnight.”

The exchange went like this:

Congressman: “We did a tabletop exercise, and in response to Sanctions against a Chinese scenario where there would be an invasion of Taiwan, the scenario was that China, the second largest foreign creditor of US Treasuries, would dump that $859 Billion in Treasury Securities.   How are you working with our Allies internationally and also the Federal Reserve to deal with a situation where China would dump that volume of Treasury Securities OVERNIGHT?”

Secretary Yellen: “So, uh, we are not engaging in specific exercises to address such a risk, but the United States National Security Council is certainly concerned on an ongoing basis.”

Congressman: “Madam Secretary, I would encourage Treasury to make preparations and be on-the-ready for that scenario.”

Underwater Vessel Goes Missing During Expedition to Titanic

A submersible touring the shipwrecked Titanic went missing around 370 miles off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.

The Boston Coast Guard deployed a search and rescue team on Monday. It is unknown how many people are aboard the Titan, which belongs to OceanGate Expeditions, CBS News reported.

“Our entire focus is on the crewmembers in the submersible and their families,” OceanGate stated, adding that they are “deeply thankful for the extensive assistance we have received from several government agencies and deep sea companies in our efforts to reestablish contact with the submersible.”

CNN Tries to Flip the Script on Hotez-RFK Jr. Debate, but It Doesn’t Go Well

As I reported on Sunday, the offer from Joe Rogan to vaccine researcher Peter Hotez to debate Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. about vaccines lit up the internet over the past couple of days. Rogan made the offer because Hotez attacked Rogan for having Kennedy on his podcast and accused him of spreading “misinformation.” So Rogan was giving him a chance to explain what he thought the “misinformation” was and offering him $100,000 for his favorite charity if he did debate Kennedy without any time limit to make his points.

Obama Suggests Digital Fingerprints For Internet Access

Former President Barack Obama spoke in a video about the importance of journalism against threats towards democracy in celebration of World Press Freedom Day.

Former President Barack Obama suggested in a new interview the development of “digital fingerprints” to combat misinformation and distinguish between true and misleading news for consumers.

Obama sat down with his former White House senior adviser David Axelrod for a conversation on the latter’s podcast, “The Axe Files,” on CNN Audio. During the interview, Axelrod noted he’s seen “misinformation, disinformation, [and] deepfakes” targeting Obama.

“As I’ve told people, because I was the first digital president when I left office, I was probably the most recorded filmed photographed human in history, which is kind of a weird thing,” responded Obama. “But just the odds are that I was. As a consequence, there’s a lot of raw material there.”

The former president added that the deepfakes — digitally manipulated images, audio, or video that appear legitimate — started with a version of him dancing, “saying dirty limericks,” or similar kinds of activity.

“That technology’s here now,” continued Obama, who warned about the issue getting worse moving forward. “So, most immediately we’re going to have all the problems we had with misinformation before, [but] this next election cycle will be worse.”

Strava heatmap loophole may reveal users’ home addresses

Researchers at NC State University have outlined potential privacy issues with popular fitness app Strava which could lead to users’ homes being pinpointed. The researchers’ findings are detailed in a paper called Heat marks the spot: de-anonymising users’ geographical data on the Strava heat map

Strava, used by more than 100 million people, includes features you’d commonly see in this kind of product like heart rate, GPS data, and so on. Users can build up a picture of their health related activities over time and make informed decisions based on the findings of the service.

The mobile tracking app is designed to track exercise activity, but it also includes a social component, allowing users to connect with each other. The primary concern of researchers focused on the heat map feature, which aggregates user data and allows you to see how many people are doing forms of exercise in various locations.

Although there are attempts to anonymise user data, the study highlighted ways in which some personal information—including home address—could be found. Researchers claim they found a “loophole” to ignore the anonymity of aggregated heatmap data.

Appeals Court Hands Maine Lobstermen Major Victory in Whale Protection Case

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled that the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) overstepped its authority with a plan for lobstermen to reduce the lines they place in the water by 98 percent within ten years.

“It’s a huge win,” eighth-generation lobsterman Jason Joyce of Swans Island, Maine, told The Epoch Times.

Federal Agency Issues Weather Alerts for Millions of People in Texas, Louisiana

Federal officials issued alerts for a “blistering heat wave” across Texas, Louisiana, and other southern U.S. states on June 19, warning that “excessive heat” will blanket the region over the coming days.

“Upper-level ridging over Mexico will amplify over Texas, which will lead to higher temperatures for much of the state but also as far east as Louisiana,” stated a June 19 bulletin issued by the National Weather Service. “High temperatures in the 100s and lows in the upper 70s and 80s will support the continued Excessive Heat Warnings and Heat Advisories that have been in effect for much of central/southern Texas and Louisiana.”

Young Adult ‘Magic’ Mushroom Use Nearly Doubles in 3 Years

The use of “magic” mushrooms by young adults has nearly doubled in three years along with other hallucinogenic drugs.

A recent article published this month in the journal Addiction found that roughly 6.6 percent of young adults in 2021 (aged 19 to 30) used hallucinogenic drugs other than LSD, up from 3.4 percent in 2018. Psilocybin, a.k.a. “magic” mushrooms, stood chief among the hallucinogenic drugs used other than LSD. Roughly eight percent of young adults used some kind of hallucinogenic drug in 2021. Men experiment with such drugs at a higher rate than women. Per the Hill:

Public health officials face a growing societal disconnect over the risks and rewards of recreational drugs. Both marijuana and hallucinogens registered historic highs in young-adult use in 2021, according to federal data.

Therapeutic use of psychedelics remains rare. Most young adults who take hallucinogens are engaging in youthful experimentation, not unlike their baby-boomer forebears in the Woodstock era. And those experiments are not without risk.

Green Monkeys: BioNTech’s mRNA Factory And The Marburg Virus

Citing microbiologist Kevin McKernan, the Epoch Times reports that green monkey DNA has been found in mRNA-based Covid-19 vaccines. This has led DD Denslow to note in a viral tweet that green monkeys were the source of the infamous 1967 Marburg virus outbreak.

Well, as so happens, the production facility of BioNTech, the legal manufacturer of the so-called “Pfizer” vaccine and supplier of most of the mRNA for European output, is not only located in Marburg, it is the very facility where the Marburg virus outbreak occurred!

The facility is known as the Behringwerke or “Behring Works,” after the German immunologist Emil von Behring. The Marburg virus outbreak began after laboratory workers at the Behringwerke were exposed to infected monkey tissues. (See here, for instance, on ScienceDirect or here, from Vice, for a popular account, including an interview with a Behringwerke employee who survived the disease.)

Unconscionable Attack Ends in Global Vindication

Dr. Paul Marik, a critical care doctor formerly with Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in East Virginia, developed the “HAT” protocol (hydrocortisone, ascorbic acid, thiamine) for sepsis and published a peer-reviewed study about it in 2017

In March 2022, Marik found himself the victim of unsubstantiated fraud allegations put forth by Dr. Kyle Sheldrick, an Australian physician, costing him his reputation and casting doubt on the effective HAT protocol

In June 2023, Marik was cleared of the allegations and his study found to be sound — hopefully restoring faith in the treatment among the medical community and granting Marik long-deserved vindication

Marik and the FLCCC filed a defamation suit against Sheldrick, resulting in a requirement that he publicly apologize

Marik is now working on researching and developing further health protocols using lifestyle modification, diet and repurposed drugs
