Mikhail Filiponenko was a member of the local legislature and previously served as police chief. He had survived a car bombing on Feb. 21, 2022, three days before Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

78-year-old Alejo Vidal-Quadras, a retired politician, appears to have narrowly survived what may have been an assassination attempt at Thursday lunchtime. Local media reported he was shot in the face at close range by a would-be assassin with a handgun as he walked out of Mass in a Madrid church. Vidal-Quadras is said to be in serious but stable condition in the hospital where he was taken after the attack.

Blue Lagoon resort temporarily shuts as ‘seismic swarm’ prompts fears of volcanic eruption
One of Iceland’s most popular tourist attractions has closed after the Reykjanes peninsula was hit by about 1,400 earthquakes in 24 hours, a “seismic swarm” that has prompted fears of an imminent volcanic eruption.
The Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa south-west of Reykjavík, announced it would close its doors on Thursday for a week after a particularly powerful earthquake hit just after midnight followed by about 800 smaller quakes.
Dozens of terrified guests reportedly fled the resort, which has two hotels, in taxis overnight after the earthquakes began. The Icelandic news website Víkurfréttir reported that about 40 guests had left overnight, adding that rocks had fallen on the road up to the hotel lobby.
The Blue Lagoon said it had made a “proactive decision to temporarily close its operations for one week” because of the “disruption” to guests on Wednesday night and the “prolonged strain on our employees”.

Politicians, executives, military officers paid for membership in ‘high-end brothel,’ feds say
From WCVB – Three people were arrested Wednesday in connection with a “sophisticated high-end brothel network” that allegedly catered to an elite clientele in Greater Boston and Eastern Virginia, including politicians, corporate executives, doctors, military officers, lawyers, professors and scientists.
Acting United States Attorney Joshua Levy said the brothel ring facilitated the movement of predominantly Asian women across the United States.
“This commercial sex ring was built on secrecy and exclusivity, catering to a wealthy and well-connected clientele,” Levy said. “Business was booming, until today.”
Those clients submitted personal information to identify themselves and often paid a monthly fee to participate in the club, which allegedly charged rates of $350 to $600 or more per hour for prostitution services, Levy said.
“Once the buyers were verified, they were texted and then allowed to place orders with commercial sex workers. They would choose the duration of the encounter they wanted, the types of services they wanted, and they also would receive a menu of different options and different women they could purchase,” Levy said.

CNN Poll: Majority Say ‘No Chance’ They Would Vote for Joe Biden in 2024
From Breitbart – A majority of voters said there is no chance they would vote for President Joe Biden in 2024, a recent CNN poll found, increasing fear among Democrats that swing voters ignore the president’s talking points.
- 51 percent said there was “no chance” of voting for Biden
- 45 percent said they were a Biden voter
- Only 4 percent labeled themselves as a “potential” Biden voter
In contrast, voters gave former President Donald Trump better marks, suggesting neither candidate has much room for growth:

Senate Passes GOP Resolution Overturning Biden Admin’s Electric Vehicle Charger Rule

RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel Responds to Calls to Resign Amid Third GOP Debate

Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody has responded to a call for the prosecution of Dr. Anthony Fauci and other architects of the U.S. response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ms. Moody’s office received documents from the Vires Law Group, whose lawyers outlined why they think that Dr. Fauci and other current and former officials should be charged, according to emails reviewed by The Epoch Times.
“This is to acknowledge the Florida Attorney General’s receipt of your concerns,” an official with Ms. Moody’s office told Rachel Rodriguez, who founded the Vires Law Group, in one of the messages.

Jezebel to shut down after 16 years as parent company lays off staff
From The Guardian – Jezebel, a feminist US news site, was shut down by its owners on Thursday, with 23 people laid off and no plans for the outlet to resume publication.
G/O Media, which owns Jezebel and other sites including Gizmodo and the Onion, announced the closure in a memo to staff, which was obtained by the Guardian.
“Unfortunately, our business model and the audiences we serve across our network did not align with Jezebel’s,” Jim Spanfeller, the chief executive of G/O Media, wrote in the memo, which was sent to staff on Thursday morning.
“And when that became clear, we undertook an expansive search for a new, perhaps better home that might ensure Jezebel a path forward. It became a personal mission of Lea Goldman, who worked tirelessly on the project, talking with over two dozen potential buyers.

An underweight, disease-ridden pony saved from a barren field months ago is making a “good recovery,” according to rescuers.
Pluto the piebald cob was found alone and neglected in a bare, snow-covered field in County Durham, UK, by animal charity workers in January this year.
“The pony had pungent, moldy hay to eat and a bucket of water which had frozen in the icy conditions,” the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) said in a press release.
